Anyone a fan of this musical? It's my favorite and I hear they are doing a movie...rumored to be using Antonio Bandaras as Erik. Any thoughts?

[LatinAccent]Hello my name is Antonio Banderas. Take off your clothes and prepare to be mounted.[/LatinAccent]

On topic, I'm a firm believer that Hollywood will manage to fuck up any classic it gets its hands on.

I think IF done right it could be good.

That's a big if. And IF They get ALW involved.

That's been in discussion for over ten years... I'd be surprised if any progress had been made.

I remember back in... 97? For some ALW celebration, Banderas appeared (this was before Evita) and sang the title track from POTO. ICK.

Looks like it's in the works. Joel Schumacher is directing and ALW is producing.

Bah...the only good Phantom of the Opera was the silent Lon Chaney version. I don't think anything could top that. Brian DePalma came close with his Phantom of the Paradise, but then again that version mixed in elements of Faust as well as other sources, still a great rock n roll phantasy movie though.

The only thing Andrew Lloyd Webber is good at is reworking compositions by Rossini

There was a film version of Phantom with a really creepy guy and some rats... It's on Showtime beyond, a lot. It's not very good.. But, I think the rats eat people. That was at least fun to watch.

oh, a phantom thread
*looks at mini phantom of the opera shrine in room*
confused
i might know a bit about this topic...

they've been talking about doing this movie for the past 15 or so years, originaly with sarah brightman and michael crawford but then there was the whole devorce and it was put to rest... anywho i few years ago andy bought back the movie rights and here we are, it's due out in december.

it wont be sung through and there adding some action... apparently there will be a horse chase and a sword fight puke but that's hollywood for ya. also they started by saying there would be no dubbing and now they're dubbing minni drivers voice, anyone who's heard carlottas part knows you have to have had perfesional voice training for it. so it makes you wonder how they picked the cast... i know joel schumaker wanted a "young sexy cast" which makes me also raise an eyebrow.

in anycase the only decent film of phantom made so far is the 1925 version and when they switch directors at the end of filming it they completely destroyed the ending. this, though the musical is very diffrent from the book, will atleast it keeps eriks redemption in the end. it wont have erik getting it on with rats (1998), pacts with the devil (1989), dwarfs (1962), being burned by acid (1943), or erik refusing to let christine go (1925).

i could babble on and on about this but i'll stop now before i've completely wierded you out blush

I saw the one with Englund and it just sucked. But I love the musical...and even if this is partially close, I'll be happy> I was confused with minnie driver though. Oh well.

here's a pic of the chandelier they're using, doesn't resemble the one from the production that actualy resembles garniers but i'm not complaining, the set's looking good.

the story was actualy loosly based on rumors going around the opera house at the time. the facts that are true, as far as i know, are that they did find the skeleton of a man in the cellers wearing a gold ring; it was writen up in the news at the time. and that while searching for a sutible hiding place for a time capceal (due to be opened 2007) they broke down a wall in the cellars and found two furnished rooms with no door leading out. of course reasonable explinations can be found for these things but it makes ya think confused

If it's not going to be musical, then why in the world would Andrew Lloyd Webber get involved?

I hope this doesn't turn out as hideously as that godawful Claire Danes version of Les Mis did...

From what I hear, actually, it IS going to be a musical, only changed a bit from the origional West End production.

There you go again dejajeva posting all of the greatest information, How did you get to be so clever. I really hope that they don't trash this. I just watched the Production playing in london a while which was execellent I must say. It sort of makes you wonder why they don't use actors from the productions to do the movie. I mean just think about all those months doing the same thing you know that they have it down. It makes sense to me. Oh well, cheers for the information smile

I would like to point out that the author, Gaston Leroux, was once a journalist. His writing style certainly reflects that.
