Although The Partridge Family may be first thing that comes to mind when you think of a family band, War Tapes just might change that preconception. While siblings Becca and Neil Popkin clearly prefer their "heart-quaking doom pop" to silly television cheese, there's something inescapably enduring about this particular family affair. Their music might reference the atmospheric goth rock of the '80s, but for bassist Becca, and lead singer Neil, one thing is certain: the family that plays together stays...
I got to see War Tapes when VNV Nation came through PDX. I've got to say, I wasn't as impressed, but then I think it's because they didn't have the same sort of sound as the previous opening band or as VNV Nation. Now, sometimes that's a good thing, but these guys were completely different altogether. In addition, the setup took too long, and they looked uncomfortable in such a small venue.
Still, it was interesting to read and I wish them luck.
