Moby could be described as a reluctant celebrity. He first found his way into the collective consciousness with the 1992 rave anthem "Go." In the faceless world of techno culture success remained within his comfort zone. For the remainder of the decade he released his increasingly hybrid electronic-based music with little fanfare outside of the dance world. His 1999 albumPlay, barely made a ripple in the ocean of record sales when it first came out.
I'll save the long explanation and just say I've been a huge, product purchasing, Moby fan since 1991. He has his own shelf on the CD wall and his vinyl section is about ten inches deep. I really haven't loved a majority of what he's been doing since Play, though. There have been little pieces, individual tracks and random 12 inches, that were moving. But mostly it just felt like he was coasting. Listened to 'Wait For Me' a couple days ago and was completely floored. Definitely his best work post-Play (ten years ago), and it could easily be a new beginning for the rest of his career in music. I still hope he makes house records, but would be perfectly happy if he continued making more "personal" and "vulnerable" stuff like this.
whiteyford, I love the entire EIW era. The album, the bonus disc, the singles and the remix album. Really great memories of that time.
fuck the haters, i really dig a lot of what moby puts out. i think he's an important contemporary composer.
i think any small, sensitive, scrawny white dude with glasses is always gonna get "picked on" in the macho-american arena. just the same as on the playground.
Great interview, thank you...as a 35 year old musician, I sometimes have to remind myself and be reminded that I first wanted to play music just because I love music; not because I wanted to impress people or sell records or meet girls (not that any of that is bad!), but just to actually PLAY. Back then when I was younger, I never thought of myself as cool and I still wanted to play my music.
Well even though I've tried over the years to look and act cool, I've come to realize that it just isn't me! LOL! And even though I look at myself now and realize that I can't ever get that record contract or be visually appealing, the music in me still remains. And for once in my life, I'm really happy about that.
And I'm super impressed and validated that such a respectable artist like Moby still feels about his art
the way that he does.
So thanks again for the article. And thanks to you too, Moby. You still write some great music, man.
Picked up the Ooh Yeah promo cd last night. Why is this not on vinyl!?!? Seriously, several of those mixes are the best ever done for your tracks. Vinyl, please.
Yes, I did just write that as if he's going to read it. So what? Nyaaa.
Also, let me clarify, Last Night and Baby Monkey for the most part are not the house choons I'm talking about. Mulholland, on the other hand, is stellar. More please.
