When you go to someone's house/apartment for the first time, what's the first thing you look at?

If visible (meaning: not in the bedroom), I check out their books and CDs. That usually tells me if we have quirky things in common.

I also notice instruments almost immediately. If it's one I'm particularly passionate about, I ask them to play a song. smile

it's hard when the majority of houses/apartments you visit are all college roomate situations.

you get a mix of several different people all mushed into one space.

i think the bedrooms are the difference, for sure.

I like to walk around and look at all the stuff they have around, decorations, little knick knacks, pictures. Yeah books and CDs. You can really get a feel for someone by how they decorate their house.

That's a good point. In that case, I sort of look at the pictures and things on the common walls before they say, "Let's go in my room... we can talk in there."

THEN I look at the books and things. wink

hmm. Usually, when Im in an unfamiliar house Im just about to pass out.. hehe. So, um.. the floor usually.. haha.
But, I like looking at whats on the walls... tells you a lot about a person I think.. I mean, if they family photos.. concert flyers... what have you..

The door usually.

[added]

This is the first thing you look at at my pad. It's on the wall directly across from the front door. I thought it was important to display something cool and positive for people to see when they first walk in. I think I read that in some feng sutra book once.

After thinking about Tekky's post, I looked around my place. I live with a roommate who has tastes VERY opposite from mine, and it's really hard to tell I live here if you look in the common rooms.

My bedroom, however, is very much Sorcha's World. The chaos of Jessica's World ends at my door. tongue

Music collection first, then books. Music tastes are usually more revealing than books as I find many put intellectual books on display as some sort of proof of their intelligence.
