If my journal can be considered a reliable source of popular opinion--and claims that it cannot have not yet been substantiated with any kind of serious research--then it appears no one but me likes fruitcake. Let me be frank, I love fruitcake. The denser and more fruit-packed the better. I like it with a thick layer of marzipan on the top and lots of chopped nuts throughout. I like it sticky and colourful. I browse the different kinds in the supermarket before selecting the one I'll take home and devour. I also like pannetone (sp?), the Italian version of fruitcake.

Is it true that I'm alone in my tastes? Are the stores stocking this stuff for me alone? Has anyone actually tried this holiday delicacy, or are all the wrinkling noses that greet my mentioning of this baked miracle signs of prejudice and ignorance rather than distaste?

I think if it had real dried fruit instead of the weird gummy things, I'd be all over it. Anything with marzipan and lots of chopped nuts makes me happy, but I don't want gummy things in my cake.

Alright, I'm talking about real fruitcake--that's the kind with real dried fruit. Sure, I love the cheap kind with the green and red cherries, but nobody whose experience is limited to that pale imitation of fruitcake can say with any authority that fruitcake is gross, or yucky, or inedible.

I'm going to have a piece of rumcake now. The kind that's aged a year or more is best.

I do like Stohlen (forgive me if I spelled it wrong) bread. Loaded with raisins and rum.

I like it, but I've been doing the Atkin's diet. So I took a look at the nutrition info on a small fruitcake my mom had in her kitchen.

One small serving had 88 grams of carbs, 580 calories. On the Atkins, you can have a max of 20 g of carbs. Just blew me away

my dad likes fruitcake, probably because he's English. About two months before x-mas, he will make one from scratch, and age it in the fridge for a while. The finished product has the strength of a concrete brick, and is just as dense.

My mom makes about 4 tons of fruitcake every year. Everyone she gives it to seems to love it. Maybe it's all the brandy she adds. I don't like walnuts or pecans.

I have had maybe one or two bites of it in my lifetime, so I guess that makes my vote "nay"
