I was reading the recent "straight edge" post, and it reminded me of the documentary from the 80's, "Another State of Mind." It was about a cross-country tour with Social Distortion and the Youth Brigade. They end up stopping in DC and staying with Minor Threat.

Anyway...anybody remember the movie? I saw it recently, and you can tell Mike Ness was gonna be a star...

I have it. Bought it at Amoeba a while a go. If you like Social D and Youth Brigade its decent and if you don't well... its decent.

I have some of it on tape somewhere.... at least a portion of it about Minor Threat.

Ian swears like crazy, talks about being straight-edge (or as he puts it "not gettin' fucked-up all the time"... I don't mean to make a big deal about the swearing, it's just that they censor it so you can really tell he's swearing by how many blank spots come out on the audio during his interviews-collages) and they show a school ID photo of him where he totally looks like a stoner metal kid, with this really freaky long hair (but of course, he didn't actually get stoned) and they show footage of him working at the ice cream store in Georgetown (Haagen Daaz, I believe; believe Rollins worked there, too?)

They show em playing "In My Eyes" in their basement.... very nice footage, very nice ragged sound...

You know Ian MacKaye is, for all the things that have been said, good and bad, about him, a downright decent person. Everytime I have ever written to him, which was just a few times, he wrote me back. Now I just have to imagine that man gets tons of letters, and anytime I've ever mentioned that he replied to me, I always here that he writes every single person back. That's pretty honorable.

I bet you're right; I taped it off some cable station so I bet they censored it.

...and btw I figure Ian is a nice guy. As I said, no big deal about swearing; I do it all the cunting time!

saw it on USA night flight back in the mid/late 80s. that movie helped me discover punk rock. i know a bunch of punks that are late 20s/early 30s who first got turned onto the scene through night flight, that movie, and suburbia. "another state of mind" is one of the great punk rock love songs. i own suburbia, and i would love to have a copy of another state of mind.

yes, USA network back in the 80s had a late night show on friday and saturday called "Night Flight" that showed cult type movies and videos. I remember seeing Teenage Riot by Sonic Youth (still my fave song by them), Stigmata by Ministry, Fishbone, Bad Brains, Red Hot Chili Peppers...this was all in like '87/'88 when those bands weren't big. and they showed Another State of Mind at least once.
i have the classic suburbia, with TSOL, DI, Flea, about the punk kids in southern california. the dude who played Jack has a bit part in Platoon.

I appreciate how everyone in that movie had terrible acne.

Edited to point out I was talking about Another State of Mind and not Suburbia, they used concealer in that movie.
