Does a porn addiction count as substance abuse? surreal

I find the whole Born To Be Mild generation entirely surreal. The first ever subculture movement based on being as clean-living as possible. Not that I'm judging or nuffink.

But join, have fun, do your clean-living sstraight-edge thing, while I keep pretending that someone saying they are sXe means they think they're sexxay!

I'd be straight-edge... if it weren't for the drugs, drinking, and casual sex that you're not allowed to have.... haha
that and the X's you put on your hand... that always confused me. I heard it was about showing you're not allowed to drink (it started at shows, minors got big X's on their hands to show their minors)... but I don't actually know.

All I do know is, that Minor Threat had a kick ass song with the name of said lifestyle, and they went by that lifestyle.

Wait, this brought up a good question in my mind ....
What's more straight edge

Oh yikes, what do I think of straight edge... This could get ugly...
I think for the kids at school and college that can't legally drink or get laid (which most kids do anyway) to say you don't want any part of that, it is actually making a personal statement about keeping clean. But, as Amitabha said, you only live once, you might as well try everything. If you do something and don't like it, don't do it again. All it takes is a little will power. Having to get X's tattood on as a reminder kinda makes me think their will power's not so great or they're not as devoted to that lifestyle as they'd like people to think... As for older people that are straight edge... To me that just seems to be needlessly denying yourselves pleasure. The last few months, I've hardly drunk at all, gotten a few wierd looks for it, and joked about having gone straight edge. Well I'm not straight edge, I just didn't particularly want to drink alcohol at those times. All those kids that say their straight edge probably aren't going to stay that way once they realize they can drink and fuck and have a good time (Not that you need those things for a good time, but that they're not dirty or evil) and they're going to be heading back to the tattoo studio to get those X's covered up.

Well, this site is as much a community as it is a porn site, so they probably enjoy the friendship and conversation as much as anyone. As for the looking at nakie girls, they probably figure it's not sex so why not, or it could be some bizarre form of self-torture, kind of like "look at all these hot girls... Wouldn't ya like to **** them?...Haha you can't because you've sworn to a life of clean living!"
Just my own theory.

This is the thing though, I thought straight edge meant no drinking, no drugs, no sex. Full stop. All or nothing. I guess my beef isn't with people that try things then take the straight edge lifestyle, but the preachy kids that don't know their ass from their elbow then decide to just drink and fuck around.

Yeah, it's also not just that they preach, but I know at least 50% will not stay straight edge once they hit college. It's kinda like when I was younger, I used to be mad for Star Trek. I still like it, but nowhere near as much as I used to, as I just grew out of it, and I think some of those preachy kids are the same, so for them to get the tattoos and everything just seems kinda dumb.
Like I said above, I don't drink as much now as I used to, but that's just my own choice. I'll still drink if I want to, just not because society says I have to. It's kinda like yourself. You've at least experienced things and said it's not your bag. That's kewlsmile But at least we know what we're turning our backs on/cutting back on.

The thing is, just in terms of my lifestyle, I'm pretty straight edged. I don't smoke (anymore), I only drink socially, and then no more than 1 or 2 beers (I never get drunk), and I don't do any other drugs (my only drug use, really, has been a bit of pot smoking, but I don't do that anymore.)

But I don't get the impulse to condemn anyone who does any of those things (unless, of course, their doing those things directly interferes wiht my life, like someone blowing smoke in my face or driving drunk), or to feel superior because of it. That's what bugs me about the straightedge thing, in its extreme. It's like the last gasp of Puritanism, this belief that moral superiority comes through self-denial. And I don't believe that at all. I think that lets "vices" run your life as surely as if you indulged in them, because you find yourself constantly at war with them. Instead, just have a beer every now and then and chill out. You'll find yourself much happier.

I'm sXe and I have been for going on 5 years. Mainly I wanted to take up the sXe life style because
A) I don't like to drink
B) I don't like drugs
C) At my school all the kids that did drugs and got drunk, for the most part, were the preppy assholes fucks that flicked me shit everyday, so it just allowed me to distance myself from them even more.

Any time I see someone drink to get drunk at a party it reminds me of a trashy frat party (like the ones in the movies) with a bunch of bimbos(guys/gals) their just to get laid. I have no problem with people drinking and doing drugs, cause it's all a matter of opinion. I say do what you want and just be happy. smile

I had alot of straight edge friends in high school. Basically I told them what I tell everyone else, I'll respect your choices, and you respect mine. Remember, the only good news is bad news, you don't hear about the many people who respectfully go outside to smoke, or the guy who tosses his keys on the roof when he goes to drink.

Most of them handled it well, but there's always the zealots of any group. And I don't have patience for people who are more concerned about running my life than taking care of their own.

That being said, I have respect for people who are straight edge and truely feel that those are the right choices for them, as long as they came to that conclusion on their own terms.

straight edge, like any other lifestyle or belief, should be kept personal and not preached to others who are enjoying a smoke or drink. I like the idea of straight edge, but I think these guys get a bad reputation for the imposing and pushing of beliefs. and at shows you expect there to be crazy pits, but usually the guy who gets kicked out for bringing too much violence is sporting the x's. not all straight edgers are bad, just the same as any other generalization is not true about a particular group.

I was straight edge for many years, and within the last two years, I have to count myself out cause I decided it was okay to occasionally drink. so no more a true straght edge kid. I don't like smoke, never did drugs, and do not engage in casual sex. it's safe to say everyone here is different and open. that's what makes the threads interesting. I see no connection for not doing drugs with liking porn, straight edge people are people too, sex is a good thing. and as with any lifestyle, like what you want to like and don't apologise.

a few of my friends are like this. i don't drink, so almost everytime we go out it's "just let me buy you a beer" or "how are we going to be friends with you when we're older and just want to hang out at the bar?" it gets annoying, especially since i've never given them shit about drinking.

i know plenty of people who live clean or whatever but who dont look to the "straight edge" label as an identity.

once you put yourself in a box, youre either in it or not in it. "straight edge" kids ultimately dont stay in it. people who make individual choices without the crutch of a tagline seem to sustain in the long-term.

bottom line: branding yourself is gay.

All but one of the straight edge kids I knew in high school are drinkers now. At the time the bandwagon was about X's around their arms and a judgemental attitudes. Now it's PBR's in their hands and nights hanging out at the bars with all their friends. I like most of them alot better now.

(none of them smoke though, so they're still 1/3 straight edge)
