Im silly for deleting files and realising months along the line that I actually want it back...is there any way that I can restore a file which was deleted approximately 3 years ago. I have tried system restore and it doesnt go back far enough

Three years ago? No. Probably something deleted in the last few weeks since files aren't really deleted until their disk space is written over.
