First of all I would like to apologize because i think i spelled that wrong. Heres my question. At work we were attempting to spell Hannukah. Nobody knew how to spell it. I swore it was spelled with a C, and everyone said i was wrong. We didn;t have anyone who is Jewish at work to ask, so we put it into word. Hannukah is what we got, and that is how Sorcha spelled it in her journal. But looking in the Groups section I happened to see the Jewish Group spelled it Chanukah. so which is correct? Are they both correct or are us non jewish peoples just so dumb that we mispell it and say it is correct?

as a word transcribed from another language that uses a different alphabet than our Roman text, it is possible to spell it both ways (and a few others, as well) correctly, as it is merely an approximation of the unique sounds of Hebrew.

Is there a Hebrew word for getting linguistically rocked hard?

you can go both ways... but i figure if you pronouce it the jewish way with the...

"kcuh-new-ka" then spell it with the c.

Otherwise, go for the h.

I am lazy, so I figure less letters is less work in all holiday activity. H it is for me.

Somehow I thought this would be about whether it was Kosher to swallow...

Only in my sick little world, I guess.

Like "Allelujah" or "Hallelujah" to use a similar analogy. Hope that didn't sound anti-Semitic.

Its translitterated. The C is diacritical and indicates that the H is gutteral, not asperated. Unfortunately, we don't have one of those in English.

Aren't you glad you asked?
