BBC miniseries State of Play has been filmified, with Russel Crowe and Ben Affleck in the lead roles. I'm in two minds about this... I suppose it might turn out to be pretty good in its own right (decent cast and writers, very good source material), but they're squeezing about 6 hours of complex plot into a 2 hour film. and Ben Affleck is a poor substitute for David Morrissey.
I have no problem with Affleck in particular (he's done well in similar roles in Changing Lanes and Boiler Room) but the fun of State of Play is the process of watching people put everything together. There's simply not enough time in a movie for that, I think. I saw recently that Jason Bateman, who's playing Dominic Foy, said that the role is about fifteen pages of the script. That's just not enough.
Maybe they'll change it significantly or something. Either way, is Paul Abbott actually writing a new series or did he just lie about it a couple years back? Do you guys across the pond know?

Interesting... that's the first I've heard of it. I suppose even if he was planning to write more, Shameless probably eats up most of his time these days.

It's from 2007, but I figure the added pressure of having the movie out might push him along? Or at least make him comment about what happened with it?
I was fine with it being one season, but you can't tease me with a second like this and not expect me to get excited. (If you can't tell, I just rewatched the series the other day.)

Well, he's done 6 seasons of Shameless since State of Play was broadcast, which must have kept him busy. And I think he was even working on an American remake of Shameless as well at some point, though John Wells seems to be working on that now. But if it's true that Abbott was working on more State of Play (I'm taking any story from The Sun with a fistful of salt ), I'd assume it's only because the BBC have asked for more, so it'll probably turn up at some point.
The most pointless remake that's upcoming has to be the Farrelly brothers remaking the Three Stooges. It's not a biopic. It's Jim Carrey as Curly, Sean Penn as Larry (maybe) and Benecio Del Toro as Moe going on wacky adventures.
Why even do this? It's not like they will improve or even match the original brilliance. Updating it with fart jokes and "better" FX isn't necessary either. Just leave it alone.

Okay, someone mentioned Life on Mars before. I kinda liked the Pilot of the US version because it had a neat moment with the WTC. But I just saw the finale. And it is so full of fail, I am honestly bowled over.
In the UK version, it all tied together and turned out Sam was in a coma. He woke up, but realized the dream was more real to him than his real life, so he commits suicide to go back there.
In the US version, he wakes up and he's on Mars. He's an astronaut on Mars and all the other characters are crew members. And "Gene Hunt" is his father. I am honestly shocked by how awful that is.
haha. I'm not even a huge fan of the original, but that sounds bad.
And it lasted almost ten minutes. It was so bad, I watched slacked jaw. I almost admire how awful it was. Almost.
Why would that remake 'Let the Right One In', let alone give it to the man who brought us 'Cloverfield' (admittedly, not a terrible movie but not at all in the same vein).

He mentioned it on a DVD commentary as well, but I don't know when that was recorded. It aired here well past when it aired there.

Well, it sounds horrible but the obvious reason is $. I'm surprised they haven't countered it with Ben Stiller as Chico, Will Ferrell as Harpo and Vince Vaughan as Groucho.

That's a shame. From what I gather though is that they encompassed the whole of the 16 UK episodes in the American version, but shitty. What a fucking cop out.
I just know that the hacks that run the network were probably all "Wait. In the original he commits suicide to go back to 1973?! We can't have that on TV! People won't get it and the censors will be up in arms. Let's make it a happy ending, in space. Done"
Fucking Hacks! Just watched the original series in it's entirety and, again, just awesome!
Started Ashes to Ashes again and my friend has been downloading Series 2! More Keeley Hawes and Phil Glenister! Can't Wait!
Ah, at last someone mentions The Wicker Man remake! It was worse than poor, it was fucking awful. The original is one of my fave films.
Fucking Neil LaBute. He's such a good playwright, too. He's going the way of David Mamet. He'd rather be a really inconsistent film director than a top notch playwright.
