Yay or Nay on them?

I have seen Saw, The Strangers, and Funny Games US. And I can tell you though kind of well made films. Yeah I'm not watching anymore.
I find it sick and disgusting. Even if it's just all Hollywood. puke

Don't forget Hostel.

These kinds of films were very trendy recently. Barftastic!

I'm not crazy about violent movies in general, but I can look past quite a bit if there is a good story. For example, one of my favorite films is the body horror, The Thing. Yes, there is some freaky dismemberment in the film, but the story about the camp's paranoia made me look past the gore.

In about 99% of these "torture porn" movies, the plot is just an excuse for the gore. Some don't even have that much. puke

I'm sick of them myself. I grew up on Freddy and Jason flicks, so I'm looking forward to the new Friday the 13th movie which, hopefully, will help restore horrors fading light.

I wouldn't lump Funny Games in with torture porn.

horror movies don't do much for me, whether or not they're thinly-veiled excuses for gore. i don't dislike them, per se, but i don't get anything out of them.

Yeah I kind of liked it and not like it at the same time. The whole "talking to the audience" thing was stupid. And the remote control thing made it even worse.

I think I'll put it up there with Vacancy. A suspense thriller movie.

ah, Michael Haneke. i still don't understand why you remade that film.

i can't speak for the new one, but the original was actually a pretty challenging film questioning the nature of violence in the media and the role the observer plays in that cycle.

maybe that's gone from the US version; or, maybe the typical US audience just can't read between the lines. whatever

I believe that he originally thought of it with an American audience in mind. though that doesn't explain why he then went ahead and made it in German anyway.

I also give it a meh.

Does Feast 2 count? Only seen the second one but it was quite horrible... all for shock value... when a beloved grandmother (of midgets I might add) whose flesh is melting from her bones is placed in a sack and slingshot from one building to another and goes splat against a wall there's something wrong there...

funny games is one of my favourite movies, also for the reasons trocc stated. when I saw the original that was actually my favourite scene for various reasons. I would never throw that one in one pot with saw or hostel by the way.
( I never felt the desire to watch the us remake though, maybe this scene comes across different in there).

there is also "irreversible" which made me sick in my stomach and I will never watch it again. still, I thought about it for a couple of days. I try to watch movies on different levels. *shrugs*

You know, I found Schindlers list to be more horrific and torturous than any of those mentioned. I guess you do become kind of dulled to them.

Besides, Anything with Kate Hudson, Tom Cruise and Dane Cook in it is more uncomfortable for me to watch than a glorified snuff film

hah .... I find that there is something exploitative about making holocaust movies , especially when genocide still occurs. There sees to be some fetish of Nazi violence and wanting to continuously portray their unique ways of murdering people. After a while it becomes camp. could a Dwayne " The Rock " or vin diesel movie be worse...? yes probably.

i don't really understand why fictionalized torture sequences (Saw/Hostel/Captivity/et al.) should be any more off-putting or morally objectionable than fictionalized serial killer/slasher (Henry/Freddie/Jason/et al.) murders.

now, if you're comparing torture porn to zombies and other supernatural type protagonists, then yeah, i can see how the former could be controversial and disagreeable to many.

for me, i think the sub genre of torture porn, as a rule, is just not that interesting to watch. first of all, it often lacks the suspense of some of the other types of horror, which takes most of the entertainment aspect away. i mean, if i want to watch torture porn, i can just turn on the news (that is, it mirrors real life too much to hold my interest as any sort of entertainment).

next, the actual story on most of the torture porn i've seen gets about as deep as that in regular porno movies. a monkey can write that shit.

so generally, when i watch a film like that, it's mainly to see how good the effects are.

I love these movies, all of them really. But a few of these movies listed, such as the strangers, and hostel are based on true events, and the fact that some one could come up with such amazing ways to torture some one like in saw is really kind of creapy.
as for torture porn, ive never really even tried to watch it, but the few porns that i have watch were all torture to me smile
