How would one go about taking one of those off? I just got home from the store and realized the clerk didn't remove the plastic security thing on a bottle. I don't want to go back to the store.

Odds are that it will take just as long to remove it as it would to go back to the store. You also run the risk of breaking the bottle.

Actually, they don't have those here. Nor can you buy liquor at a grocery store. Nor can you buy liquor on Sundays, for that matter.

Still, from the pictures I saw from Googling, going back to the store looks best.

Things like that on other things normally give up pretty easily to a knife or a screwdriver They're normally just hard enough to get off that you couldn't do it in a store without someone noticing.

Most of the time they just come off. Yeah, the local grocery stores are real careful about those. Actually, they don't put them on most of the time. Shrink wrap is enough, I guess.

Anyway, screwdriver...it's just plastic. Even a sturdy pair of scissors will probably crack it enough to break it off.

If the plastic cap has 4 vertical slots around the top edge, like this, you'll need 4 medium size flat blade screwdrivers, pushed down at the same time, one per slot. Leave the screwdrivers in while lifting the cap from the bottle.

Or you can fit up a dremel with a mini cutting wheel and go up one side and down the other. Wear a long sleeve shirt if you do it this way, because the dremel will fling bits of hot plastic here and there.

For me, the decision as to whether I'd take a crack at this myself or take the bottle back to the store would involve a careful cost-benefit analysis of whether it'd be worth it to lose this precious sauce. Put another way: What kind of bottle are we dealing with here? A $15 bottle of Gilby's or a $45 liter of Hendrick's?

Also, if you try this yourself and don't take pictures and post them here, you fail at life.

If you do decide to bring the bottle back to the store, definitely bring your receipt. Otherwise they might think you were shoplifting.

sick and sad ain't it?! but yeah, big plastic overcaps I'd guess you'd call 'em. Can't open the bottle if they're on. I'm sure someone has pics they can post of a few styles. or just check the net. They are all over the U.S. now.!!

This is called an alpha tag key and does the trick,

http://www.securemesolutions.com/icon-78805763.jpg

but you need to be a reg. retail biz, security co. , etc. to get one. (so they say) but I would bet there are ways around that, all of which would do you no IMMEDIATE good, but a very , VERY strong magnate will release most EA and other security devices. Otherwise- break a little glass!!
