Ummm, from the simple declarative tone, followed by a straightforward question. He said, in short, I like tribal, here's why I like tribal, I notice a lot of people stay away from tribal, I wonder why that is.

This is not really an instance where conversational nuance can be missed.

Many of the responses here boil down to "tribal sucks", and they're largely from people who, were they the age they are now when tribal broke big, wouldn't have any tattoos at all.

Try reading the post in order. You have misinterpreted. It's okay. I forgive you.

You were piggybacking, responding to one post while answering another. Despite your inability to quote or form complete sentences, that much is clear.

PS: Your beard is the tribal tattoo of the year 2018.

personally I think tribal can be very beautiful.. however it doesn't usually stand for anything.. I love tattoos that have meaning behind them.. a whole story that only few would know. It seems personal to me. Tribal is hard to personalize because the symbols are just that.. symbols that are made to look a certain way.

Honest opinions were asked for regarding tribal. So people gave them.

Also the point I was making about snideness was not in regards to the original post, but the quoted post.

Tribals make you seem tough without actually being tough. But I know understand that chick+tribals=sweet

But all the same if your a guy and you spend your off time drinking beer and going to the gym and you have a tribal that you didn't atleast design your self. Then you are probably a fag.

Aesthetically I definitely prefer old school/ Man's Ruin type tattoos, yet they can be just as uninspired and pointless as tribal. Their main advantage is that not nearly as many people have them.

Tribal I think seems safe to people precisely because it does not actually represent anything.

Though I am by no stretch of the imagination an authority on tattoos and their meanings, I think by the very nature of the term "tribal," that somewhere in the world, to a particular culture, that these tattoos do have meaning. I might be wrong, though, due to the fact that American tribal tattoo art is a very watered-down version of some other tribal tattoo art, and therefore without meaning.

Indeed Cassiel.

I have three tribal tattoos based on norse tribesmen's artwork found in Sweden dated to the 700s - 900s.

My first two tats were 'tribal'-ish, but like everyone else I came to associate tribal tats, for the most part, with frat boys playing boy-band bad boy and douchebags. There are always exceptions, and large-scale tribal peices do still sometimes knock my socks off.

Tattoos don't need to have intellectual integrity for me to like them. A friend of mine got eggs and bacon on his wrists and it's one of my favorites! Is it super artistic looking? Nah. Does he believe he was a breakfast platter in his past life? I hope not. But it's just fun. Eggs and bacon are tasty to him. Even if he weren't a huge fan of eggs and bacon but just got it for the fun value, I'm down. Don't care.

With that being said, tribal tattoos can be boring to me, and as Nixon (and others) has already mentioned, they currently often represent the frat boy mentality. Not really for me.

What a dumb thread.

As long as you don't get tattoos with the mindset of "I can always get it lasered off later if I change my mind" then it's your body and I don't give a fuck what you put on it.

Discussions about people's aesthetic preferences are sort of central to the Lifestyle board.

Tribal can be just fine if it's done well. Unfortunately, a lot of it isn't done well or is sadly uninspired, as many others have mentioned here. A lot of the shots posted in this thread I like quite a bit, but they're rare amongst the clichéd barb-wire bicep tattoos (and others in the same vein).

The word you are looking for is "ubiquitous".

The difference between tribal and "traditional" is that traditional hasn't gone out of fashion yet. I assure you, there are as many nautical stars and hula girls and swallows and bluebirds and brass knuckles and elbow switchblades out there as tribal pieces.

PS: The people who have them aren't bikers or sailors or prostitutes any more than the people with tribal tats are Maori or Dayak.

If you're getting a tattoo while wondering "will people like this?" you probably shouldn't be getting a tattoo.

My first tattoo (and really my favorite) is a well-known logo. I got it because I like it. I've heard people really disparage logo tattoos...and I just don't care. It's on ME....and I like it.

I find, in general, that disparaging certain kinds of tattoos is bad form. Sure, many of us snicker a little when we se a REALLY BAD tattoo...but you should just keep it to yourself.

I've always been half-way tempted to get a tattoo precisely to inspire snickers. . .

Then again, I'm one of the wierd ones that thinks getting a nice butterfly across my back or "Linkin' Park Rules!" on a shoulder is hilarious.
