Police: Pa. man shot for making noise during movie

By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press Writer Maryclaire Dale, Associated Press Writer - 2 hrs 4 mins ago

PHILADELPHIA - A man enraged by a noisy family sitting near him in a movie theater on Christmas night shot the father of the family in the arm, police said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, told the man's family to be quiet, then threw popcorn at the man's son, police said. The victim told police that Cialella was walking toward his family when he stood up and was shot.

Detectives called to the United Artists Riverview Stadium theater in South Philadelphia found Cialella carrying the weapon, a .380-caliber handgun, in his waistband, police said.

Cialella faces six charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault. He remained in custody Saturday. Police said bail had been set, but they did not know the amount.

Lt. Frank Vanore called the incident "scary that it gets to that level of violence from being too noisy during a movie."

Vanore said the 31-year-old victim from suburban Yeadon was hospitalized in stable condition after the shooting. His name had not been released.

It was not immediately known whether Cialella had a lawyer. A woman who answered a call to Cialella's home number Saturday declined to comment.

A theater manager referred calls to Regal Entertainment Group spokesman Dick Westerling, who did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Police could not confirm what movie was playing in the theater, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Hey it was only a warning with a lesson. It is not like Cialella killed the loud guy.

we had this problem and others like it all the time until they instituted mandatory pre-movie instructional videos here in Austin.

I swear, the zombie outbreaks were getting to be a fucking nuisance.

I need to visit this place as soon as humanly possible.

For those of you not living in Philly, the Riverview is a big multiplex that plays popular commercial films. It has a well-deserved reputation among some serious movie fans for having badly behaved and sometimes belligerent customers who talk endlessly through movies, make and receive cellphone calls and messages, and generally spoil the film. Most of my friends in town would not see a film at the Riverview if it was free.

This is not their first shooting.

There are much better mainstream theaters in town, like the Bridge in West Philly.

This sounds like my movie theater back when Godfather III came out on Christmas Eve and then they had to put in metal detectors. Fun times!

I think it all depends on the movie. I went to see 20 days of night in the theatre, and that movie was SOOO boring. I almost got kicked out for making fun of it the entire time.

I don't think it depends on the movie, you should have gotten kicked out. Although in the context of this thread, I don't think you should have been shot.

Agreed. But if you read deathadder's post carefully, you can see he left two thirds of the way through.

"this movie sucked! it just ended all of the sudden, with no resolution, after like an hour and fifteen minutes!"

Why do I bet the family will not take the lesson here. Next time they are at the theater, they still will not shut the fuck up.

God I am glad I have a great home theater setup. I am lucky if I have the urge to see something in theaters once a year because of assholes like all party involved in this.
