i'd just like to vent that anytime i've gone to a doctor or dentist they pressure me to take out my peircings and it's really starting to piss me off. i've had all my peircings about a year now, i know what they like/don't like. my doctor has told me contradictive things to what my peircer tells me (i follow the peircers instructions) and it's obvious my doctor/dentist doesn't know very much about the subject. is it because i'm in a conservative small city or do others share my frustration???

Have a talk with your doc about their vices. A lot of MDs smoke- one of the ways of coping with the stress of med school. Better yet, find a new doctor.

Nope.
I live in the SF Bay Area, where at least half the population has body mods..
And doctors here still have no motivation to actually educate themselves on the subject.
My friend had an infected ear piercing, and the doctor told her to remove it immediately. The next morning her ear was twice the normal size because well, the hole was gone. I won't go into the gory details... but you get the picture.
I'm not saying doctors are stupid people.... but in my experience they're a bit ignorant about the proper protocol with body mods.
Not something they teach extensively in med school, I guess.

i HATE needles more than ANYTHING in the whole wide world. And everytime I go to get a shot, novicane, or get my blood taken, the nurses/doctors/dentist... always say in the mocking tone, "How can you be afraid of this needle when you have all those huge tattoos...you cant really be afraid of this little needle..."blah blah blah. When will people realize its not the same. mad

Things must be a bit different where you are cause my dentist was giddy when she saw my tongue stud. She asked me all sorts of questions and just warned me to be careful with the metal and my teeth (sensible precaution)

My doctor has never even breathed a word about it to me.

I would just tell your doctor that it is your body and your choice and they should drop it or they will lose your business. And personally I would NEVER go to my doctor about a problem unless my piercer told me to. (Also talk to the piercing professional first in my opinion.)

When I had my tongue pierced, my dentist questioned it a bit, but mostly because he'd never seen one. (I'm from a tiny, conservative town). He warned me not to click it against my teeth and left it alone from there on.

I took it out because it affected my singing, not because of a doctor or dentist. tongue

I take no risks - I take mine out before I go to the dentist because the effect X-Rays.

They're out for an hour or two tops, so they go back in easy.

I've never had the doctor say anything to me, not even the obgyn. I suppose they see way worse.

The only time I removed my jewlery was for my breast reduction. I put monofiliment in all my piercings and my doctor tried to save my nipple piercing with a sterile tube durring surgery. He even made sure he didn't cut into "that pretty tattoo" on my chest. I lost the piercing but at least he was respectful of my piercings and tattoos.

That's really surprising. Your doctor must be pretty open-minded.

None of my doctors have ever said anything about my tattoos in general, but it's not really their place. When my doc had to do a breast exam on me last year she got to see my flames and pierced nipples for the first time, and she looked a little shocked but recovered fast. biggrin For her to have made a comment would have been like saying "oh, your breasts are so full and shapely". A good doctor probably shouldn't be commenting on your body, tattooed or not.

The plus side, though, is every time I go in and have to have something done that could be painful she always assumes I'm tough as nails and says "well, it's nothing you can't handle, anyway". Hee hee hee.

My doctor is probably barely thirty, and only takes University students as her patients. She's never said anything negative about my piercings or about the fact I'm vegan. A doctor who acts otherwise is a sign you need a new doctor!

My old dentist told me I'd deffinitly chip my teeth with my tongue studs. Lady, I've never even chomped one, I think I'll take the risk. whatever My current dentist tells me my piercings are placed such that I've little to worry about. THANK YOU.

The last time I went to the obgyn, she said 'hey, isn't that cute?', and flicked my hood piercing. When I practically jumped out of the stirrups, she congratulated me on not losing sensation.

My dentist told me every time to take out my (3) tongue piercings because I would chip my teeth on them & he was right, I did, really badly. I have no tongue piercings now frown
They're still telling me to take out labret piercings too but I haven't had any accidents with those other than biting down on them about twice in 5 years which hasn't done any serious damage.

I won't even get into the things MDs tell me...especially when they think my medicine in bunk.

I'm an acupuncturist. I see nothing wrong with piercings or tattoos. Qi along channels is rarely affected by a piercing. Hell, the channels themselves aren't exactly static...the points themselves tend to move and get bigger or smaller when we're ill or not.

So, yeah, when people ask me if there's anything wrong with piercing or tattoos I say no.

However, piercing through a tattooed area with an acupuncture needle can actually hurt a little more than through virgin skin.

But then, if you've had tats you won't mind acupuncture.

the dentist isn't so bad with me, but it's the doctors that piss me off.

i had to have a very minor surgery done on one of my fingers a few years ago. and the nurse basically yelled at me because i had piercings. "i can't BELIEVE you came into surgery like this. how many piercings do you have?! take them out!$%"

and i just sat there and told her to quit shouting at me, as it was my first time in surgery and it was for such a ridiculous thing i didn't think it would matter. she even made me take off my fucking nail polish! i had just gotten my eyebrow pierced at the time and i told her i couldnt take it out because it would close up. she FREEEAKED out. and i said

"well do you have a pair of fucking pliers!?"

nurse: no.

"well do you want me to call my damn piercer? he'll have to travel about three hours to remove it because i'm not doing it."

nurse: IF SOMETHING HAPPENS DURING SURGERY AND PROFUSE BLEEDING STARTS UP WE HAVE TO COTURIZE (sp?) THE VEIN TO STOP IT AND THIS TRAVELS TO METAL SO IT WILL GET VERY HOT AND BURN YOU WHERE YOU ARE PIERCED!@%"

"if the doctor does something to make me bleed profusely from this horribly small ridiculous operation, then something is clearly wrong with him and he should not be a surgeon. i'll take my risks and get burned if i must"

and she just stormed away. she was such a goddamned bitch towards me. i swear to god we were shouting at eachother for about an hour. i would have been much nicer had she not completely freaked out the second she saw me. i'm from a very small close-minded town, so i'm pretty sure my appearance just plain out bothered her and she wanted to have a go at me since she was the nurse. goddamn bitch.

they werent even supposed to knock me out for the procedure and they ending up doing it anyway. probably because i was freaking out and yelling at everyone. UGH .

yeah. rant over.

My mom recently had minor surgery and all those things were covered in her pre-op appointment. They're legit concerns, but they should have told you about it ahead of time. I hope you've changed doctors since then.

the first time my gyno saw my hood pierce she actually said "oh, that's so cute." I don't think she has a problem with it.
