Inspired by this thread, and all the "OMG GOD WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS?!!!111" comments contained within, I will start this thread off with flying spiders.

Humans have known for quite a while that some spiders engage in a kind of flying called "ballooning." To balloon, spiders release a parachute-like web into the air (with themselves attached) and allow the wind to pick them up and deposit them in greener pastures. What humans did not know until very recently, however, is that these spiders actually check the weather before taking flight.

This thread is for actual animals that give you nightmares, as opposed to fictional ones, like the Sarlacc.

spiders, pretty much. i actually walked out of a room inspection being conducted by my company commander because a spider crawled up from behind my bed. it was an incredible feat of self-control that kept me from sprinting out.

cockroaches.

One time My friends and I were walking through town on a hot summer night, and it was literally like that scene in Indiana Jones where they're walking through the tunnel *crunch crunch.* I screamed and ran as fast as I could, anywhere, just to get away from the blankets of live cockroaches that covered the streets. That was a nightmare in real life. (I didn't like cockroaches before, and that just sealed it.)

You'd have to catch one first. They're called coconut crabs. They're called that because they can crush coconuts with their giant horrible claws. Death by land crab-crushed skull is a bad way to go.

I'm betting, if they're protected and carry a $3,500 fine that they're quite tasty.

I don't think something that looks like that needs to taste good for people to want to kill it.

According to Wikipedia,

Should a Coconut Crab pinch a person, this is not only painful but the frightened crab will usually hold fast. Thomas Hale Streets reports the following trick, used by Micronesians of the Line Islands, to get a coconut crab to loosen its grip:

It may be interesting to know that in such a dilemma a gentle titillation of the under soft parts of the body with any light material will cause the crab to loose its hold.

And they cannot swim or breath underwater.

They weigh up to 9lbs but can lift up to 64lbs! eeek

also from the Wiki:

The Coconut Crab is eaten by the Pacific islanders, and is considered a delicacy and an aphrodisiac, with a taste similar to lobster and crab meat. The most prized parts are the eggs inside the female Coconut Crab and the fat in the abdomen. Coconut Crabs can be cooked like other large crustaceans, by boiling or steaming. Different islands also have a variety of recipes, as for example Coconut Crab cooked in coconut milk. While the Coconut Crab itself is not innately poisonous, it may become so depending on its diet, and cases of Coconut Crab poisoning have occurred. It is believed that the poison comes from plant toxins, which would explain why some animals are poisonous and others not. Reputedly[citation needed] this poison is considered an aphrodisiac, similar to the highly poisonous pufferfish eaten in Japan. However, Coconut Crabs are not a commercially significant species and are usually not sold.

They're cool looking, but I'd prefer to just look at pictures rather than have one scuttling towards me.
