The Centipede. The Snake. The Scorpion. The Lizard. The Toad.

"Five Deadly Venoms" is such a great movie, and a great introduction to 70's style kung fu movies if you've never seen one. The choreography in these films is truly impressive. Every time I watch the fights, I think of how many missed takes they must have ahd, and how painful the screw ups must have been.

Newer movies like Fist of Lened with Jet Li are great too (although it's a remake of the older Bruce Lee classic). The scene with the belt is incredible.

So, who else here is lovin' the Hua Fist, Shao Lin, and Poison Clan styles?

i dont know the titles of my favorites. back in the day the local station would show kung fu action theater. two movies every saturday. as a rule, ill take mine bloody and extremely ridiculous.

can anyone name the one with the 'iron claw' technique? i think you can only do it at high noon and you jump over the guy and drive your fingers into the opponents skull. there is another scene where he drives his fingers into someones ankle.

if it doesnt have a cross-eyed derelict in the background pretending to help fight by half-assedly mocking the heros moves, im not interested.

wow...old school shaw bros...such a great marriage of technique, camera and revenge! hmm...hard for me to pin down a favorite. If it is Shaw Bros, has Gordon Liu or the Venoms in it, those are classics. It's like picking your favorite children.

Modern favs? Drunken Master 2 or Fist of Legend...depends on the day. Best action/fight scene? the pachinko parlor fight in Thunderbolt is true a masterpiece.

having sold a great deal of HK, classic and modern in retail, wholesale, underground and otherwise, sometimes it feels like i've forgotten more films than most people will ever see. at least with dvd more people are getting to know the joys of unabashed HK filmmaking!

Tsui Hark's Blade is often overlooked, I think. I think it is a solid film. and Iron Monkey? classic. Iron Monkey is Iron Monkey. (if you saw the early Tai Seng tapes you know what i mean...sometimes mistranslating can be fun.)

NiSse, I second all of your recommendations except for Operation Scorpio, as I haven't seen that yet.

I'd add to that the Once Upon a Time in China series. History, Tsui Hark style and Jet Li kicks.

I hate to admit it, but it's been at least a year since I've seen many of my favs...now I have to dig them out and watch them...the only bad side effect of talking HK films for me is that their energy is infectious and I keep getting reinfected.

Anyone seen What Price Survival? It's a remake of the One Armed Swordsman. It's not the best movie, but guys in black trenchcoats looking cool with swords...what can't be good about that, right?

oh wow NisSe i think i love you smile
http://www.hongkonglegends.co.uk have taken an obscene amount of money from me over the years, there was a point about 6 months ago where i owned everything they're released (before i was poor frown ) i think 20th century fox are porting copies of their discs in the US now, their remastering work is fucking astounding, i've never seen kung fu looking better smile plus they have a guy called bey logan who does commetaries for nearly all the releases, he's like the oracle of kung fu movies, every one is like a film studies class.

Ok, I can't believe no one has mentioned Ricky Oh - The Story Of Ricky. It wasn't made in the seventies, but it's still a classic.

Another fantastic movie is Duel To The Death. It has everything - crossdressing, flying ninjas, sword fighting, flying ninjas, gratuitous nudity, and flying ninjas!

I can think of one movie like that, it's called "Iron Man"...
or sometimes "Chinese Iron Man"
or "Young Hero of the Shaolin II"
or "Xin fang shi yu xu ji"
or "Chou lian hu an"
and probably 3 or 4 other things too.

I rented it once from the local video store (and the box accidentally had a copy of Tetsuo: The Iron Man the first time) when it was re-released as part of the Wu-Tang collection. The description on the box had said something about a climactic battle on the plum blossom poles, and had absolutely nothing to do with the movie inside.

The most memorable moment from the actual movie itself, aside from the guy with the iron finger technique, was when all the heroes get together in this big open area and fight about 60 guys with bladed cymbals. If that rings a bell, it's probably the same movie.

Speaking of kung-fu movies though, my personal favorite is probably Last Hurrah for Chivalry. The last 45 minutes is pretty much a gigantic fight scene occasionally broken up by non-action stuff. Also the fight with Sleeping Sword is probably my favorite swordfight scene ever.

it's all about the master of the flying guillotine. i think the creators of capcom's street fighter 2 watched it a few too many times.

Tai Chi Master (aka Twin Warriors)

There is a part when our Hero, Jet Li discovers the true power of Tai Chi through nature. Reminds me of when I became self aware at 0123762347.

I didn't read this topic, but thoguht I wuld drop a dime on y'all. GO check out, rent, buy, whatever you have to do but see: KUNG FAUX. it's a bunch of vintage Kung Fu movies dubbed by ebonicized black people from Tommy Boy Records and is hillarious. On top of the jargon, they added some cheesy special effects and made it masterfully funny. I saw five deadly venoms btw and it ruled!

You know, I didn't see the appeal of that movie. It was long, with few interesting fight scenes, and the actual master guy was kinda lame, always jumpin' around. Maybe you should watch it with friends, but I was unimpressed.
