Hello, I'm new here, just wondering if there are any other scientists or science-oriented people here. I'm studying neurobiology, so I was just curious.

"Hard" science or "soft" science? For example, poli sci is a soft science and molecular biology is a hard science. I'm just a weenie computer scientist / engineer that pretends to be a scientist to post on threads.

Well, I've found that that depends on who you ask. Physicists think that biology is a soft science. Molecular biologists think neurobiology is a soft science. Neurobiologists think psychology is a soft science. etc., etc... I'm not sure what Freud would have to say about all that. I prefer to assume an inclusive definition. If you consider what you do to be science, then it is.

Flux - That's pretty fascinating. How does one become an amateur particle physicist?

WaTed - What exactly are you studying?

I'm not studying anything at the moment. I graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry a couple of years ago and I had to abandon an MSc in Computing this year due to lack of funding...

Scientist? No.

Science-oriented? Hell yes. I'm a math and physics geek. Someday I'll even get a piece of paper to prove it.

You study amateur particles, of course.

(If you're smart, you leave the hard core professional particles to the pro boffins.)

I work with some natural scientists from time to time, if that helps.

My degree will say Computer Science.

'Science' covers a huge variety of professions.. I'm willing to bet there's a ton of people who fall into that category somehow around hehe, heh.

Grad school in biology is actually lots of fun. As long as you can resign yourself to living without that much money (although a stipend can go pretty far, you'd be surprised) you'll have a great time. I can't imagine a better lifestyle - you get to study what you want, when you went. You make your own hours, and most of the people who you work with are intelligent and really interested in their work. I highly recommend it.

I'm going to be a sociologist, but I don't know if that counts.

It has an -ist, though!

so do:

phrenologist

umm... that's all I got. wink

Seriously, I think sociology is a very interesting field, and it definitely qualifies as a social science. (I think the term "soft science" is sort of patronizing, even if it is occasionally useful.) I think that's awesome. Good going.
