HOW FREAKING COOL IS THIS?!?!

Link to the Article in the Independent

16-year-old schoolgirl is making a unique pitch to become the first woman to play professional baseball in Japan . . . Eri Yoshida was drafted by the Kobe 9 Cruise . . . "I always dreamed of becoming a professional," Yoshida, who is 5-feet (152-centimeters) tall and weighs 114 pounds (52 kilograms), told a news conference Monday. "I have only just been picked by the team and haven't achieved anything yet."

She's a knuckleballer, and would love to follow in Tim Wakefield's shoes. Hell, given our last two imports from japan, I say the sox should go for her biggrin

In baseball I hardly think size matters. Even if it does in some odd way, size is not always everything. I've seen some pretty big guys get their ass kicked by tiny little dudes.

Well,I beg to differ. When it comes to the mechanics of pitching someone who is 5 ft. tall just doesn't have long enough levers(arms) to pitch in the big leagues, that's why in MLB most pitchers are over 6ft. and change. Nor is she going to have the strength to be a very good hitter at a professional level. There's kids in American Little League that are bigger than her.

I do wish her the best though.

Yes but Tim Lincecum from the Giants who just won the Cy Young is listed at 5'11 but is shorter then that...and somehow he manages to pull off 97mph fastballs. I think I saw somewhere where they said he was closer to 5'8.

I don't think Wakefield ever had a fastball hit 80mph. It's all about the offspeed stuff for a knuckleballer. You never know, she might do ok.

Well, she did get drafted, so clearly they consider her to be up to their standards.

Yeah, no kidding.
I heard about this briefly on CNN and can't remember exactly what they said, but it pretty much boiled down to her being really fucking good. And good for her. smile

Yes, I said what you were thinking.

Uh..ok. Lincecum is definitely not 5 flatfeet tall..and if it's generous to list him at 5'11" ...then she Must be at least ,um, 4 ft. 5".

I'm not buying it. whatever
