...Ok I have really bad credit, I'm talking a 400 credit score along with agencies garnishing my pay to settle some debts. I was told that I can't even get my own apartment (meaning in my name) no matter how much I put down, they'll turn me down no matter what because of my horrible credit apparently. By the way I'm not that much of a loser, I live with my girlfriend wink

I was also told that because of bad credit it can hurt my chances on getting a job. Personally I don't understand that one, what does working have to do with my financial troubles? Please elaborate.

Some jobs check your credit.....They think that if you have a bad credit score that you will be more likely to steal, make bad decisions, or be unreliable. Fucked huh?

Some real estate companies will overlook bad credit and you can still find private apts with private landlords who don't even check credit. I've never heard of jobs checking credit.

financial jobs will certainly check (bank tellers and whatnot), as will some retail establishments. Mostly limited to gigs handling wads of cash or high end items that could be stolen and sold easily

Is it true that even after I pay everything off, and give myself a clean credit record right after that is there any real way to restore my credit back to normal, even with the severe situation I'm in now with credit? Plus would it help me to get a job if I show improvement after I take care of my credit troubles?

I'm taking tests to become a NYPD officer here in NY, and someone let me know straight off the bat that I could have trouble getting hired by the NYPD and/or any "city" job because of my bad credit history, I think that's just ridiculous

If you interview well it can overcome almost anything.

I know that when I was interviewing for county jobs they let me know that a credit (and background) check would potentially be part of the hiring process. Although at least one potential employer told me she wouldn't actually run the credit check as she didn't believe it was appropriate for them to be checking into that for the sort of work they were offering. And I don't think they ran one when I eventually was hired, either.

You don't think someone with serious debt might have problems refusing tainted money, and as such, putting said person in a position of authority could cause serious problems?

since when does living with a girlfriend make you not a "loser"?

in all seriousness though, i have horrible credit and always gotten places and jobs without too many problems. i think in a lot of situations a little maturity goes a long way, just something to think about.

Maybe someone should forward that to the NYPD's hiring department?* Personally, I wouldn't want someone who can fly off the handle on a whim like that brandishing a weapon and "protecting" me or my city.

And, yes, I'm quite sure they will do both a background check and a credit check on you.

My job did, and it's not nearly as important as an authority figure such as a police officer. I just work around a crap-ton of expensive (and pretty) technology.

*not actually being serious, but yeah, that thread makes me uncomfortable, and as much as you don't want to hear it, Little_Mayhem, I really suggest you should rethink you career choices because someone who thinks that way needs help and shouldn't be put in a position of authority.

This guy has to be fake - who on earth would log into a message board and tell everyone that he 1. has shitty credit 2. isn't getting laid 3. is engaged, but wants to discuss the con's of getting married and last but not least, 4. sometimes wants to beat his woman.

I could see this stuff being casually mentioned in a thread, but to START threads just to talk about how fucked up you are. I apologize if I'm being overly judgemental, but fuck have some self respect and yank your dirty laundry down off the clothesline!

Which, is fitting, considering this guy starts these kind of retarded, backward ass threads, and his "story" details change every goddamn time.
