October 2003

What is everyone reading right now?

I'm reading a great anti-consumerist book by John De Graff et al. titled "Affluenza". Unfortunately I bought it at Barnes and Noble with a credit card. Kinda goes against the whole premise of the book.

Also reading a novel by Edward Docx titled "The Calligrapher". Very good as well.

I read several books at a time. I have ADD I think.....

I'm reading "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon. It's quite good so far, but I'm not that far into it yet.

Those 2 posts...now the stuff I'm typing...

oh, books...yeah, I'm still reading Motley Crue's "The Dirt", slowly, as to enjoy it at many different times. Also, you know, cable tv, movies and videogames keep me from my reading.

I'm reading yet another compilation of The Best Time Travel Stories Of All Time. How can there be three of these fuckers (that I've found so far)?

Also, I picked up an Ad-Buster. That's a good mag. Oh, yeah, National Buy-Nothing Day is November 28th. Buy nothing on the day they tell you to buy everything. Participate by not participating.

See, I was going to make that joke, but someone else already did. Plus, I thought it was beneath me. As so many things are.

Le sigh, I am so great.

Oooh, is it really good gnarly Bros. Grimm, where they make Cinderella's sisters dance in red hot lead shoes until they die?

I'm reading about half a dozen things right now, but one truly exceptional book:

An Archaeological History of Japan, 30,000 BC to AD 700 by Mizoguchi Koji.

Okay, so not only does Mizoguchi cover the Jomon, Yayoi and Kohun eras with aplomb, he rocks the theory like a badass. It's post-processualist, but in all the best ways--he doesn't just regurgitate Hodder or Tilley. I swear to god, this book makes me want to sew square book-shaped pouches on my clothes so I can carry it around at all times. If I ever write something half this good, I will be a happy Minty.
