Yes just as the title says... I'm in debt with a credit card and neglected to pay my bill for a year, granted I know my credit is already fucked up because of this but now I got a letter in the mail saying that I'm being sued and I must appear in court, I owe them $1,100. How do I go about this? I'm being told 10 different things by my co-workers.

Definitely the wrong place, but:

Have you spoken to the credit card company, or whatever service they are using, to try and set up a payment plan?

At this point, you probably want to speak to their collection agent. They'll probably work a deal for less than the amount owed.

Agreed. This happened to one of my friends. They settled with her for about half of what she owed.

I think if you don't contact them and don't show up in court, they automatically win and can garnish your wages. I'm not sure if they can do anything with your personal property though.

Pay your bill. Or ignore it. Bad credit is the best defense against identity theft.

sounds like citibank. anyway...first of all, they don't want to go to court, the amount you owe is not worth the court costs and lawyer fees. call the collections agency that's using this scare tactic, and work out a payment plan. it's worth it just to stop the collections calls.

It's also a good defense against home ownership. These days, that's a good thing.

Even good credit is a defense against home ownership nowadays.

Call them up and arrange a payment plan. They'll be willing to work with you on installment plans and may even reduce the amount you owe in exchange for prompt payment.

Call them and see if you can get a payment plan.

I didn't do that. I thought it would just go away. I didn't show up in court and then had a judgment for the amount. I had to take a loan out from my job to pay it off. I still have to contact the court to change my judgment to Satisfied. For some reason they never updated it after I paid so now when a credit check is run, that judgment comes up as still be unpaid.

This was may be 5 years ago. Judgments last for 7 years I think. Not good.

lawsuits are often used as a bullying tactic by creditors. if they think that you're going to start giving them money, they almost always drop the suit. especially for chump change like that (as far as lawsuits go), because of how little they'd be getting out of that, if anything, given how expensive lawyers are per hour.

failing that...

Don't talk to collections agencies on the phone, Did you get a letter from the Collection Agency or a summons from the court?
