So I've been pretty actively playing Spore since it came out last Sunday. I don't think the DRM is a huge deal (though Amazon users will claim differently) and while irritating, should not be a reason you don't buy this game.

Anyone else out there enjoying this as much as I am? The Ryglate empire is going strong, expanding outward from planet Lynkahn to take over the Universe. Will I see your creatures there?

Meh. I probably would have bought it if it wasn't DRM'd.

it's pretty fun, but i feel like in stretching to cover so much ground it lost a lot of depth. i would have preferred to play each stage as several levels instead of just one.

The Pirate Bay
If I want to rent a game I'll rent it. DRM means you don't own your copy, they are giving you temporary permision to use it. I will never buy anything with DRM, be it music, video or games.

It's an alright game. I'm more into the creature maker than the actual game itself.

Digital Rights Management. Basically means that you're buying a license to use the product under certain conditions or until the company decides you can't use it anymore, after which point your game (or music, or software, or whatever is under DRM) will no longer work.

So does anyone know what that means specifically for this game?

For example: I buy a copy of the game. I install it on this computer. This computer dies. Can I install that same copy on a new computer I get, or would I have to buy a whole new copy of the game?

I think you have 3 times you can install it.

but users are reporting problems with examples like "my spouse wants to play it and have his/her own unique account" but can't. because of the retarded fucking DRM. so they have to buy a whole other copy.
great for the company. terrible for the consumer.

Thanks for the link. That's enlightening. Perhaps I shan't be buying this game. If I have to connect to the internet every time I want to play it just for security verification, that's not an option for me.

It's more of an iPhone spinoff. The only versions of Spore proper are Mac and PC.

Me too. It looks like a fun game, but I was on the fence with it. DRM solved that problem. I'm not shelling out fifty bucks for that. I'll probably play it in a few years when it's cheaper.

It's not like it isn't going to be pirated anyway.

already is. although the pirated versions can't get online which sucks if you wanted the full experience, but ultimately im fine with just the creature creator.

i've been playing it on my puter without connecting to their server network. all that does is allow you to share your creations with people and download other people's stuff.

hell, i played with it not networked for something like most of the whole of Friday, because my service was down.

I've not heard anywhere that you're limited on the number of times you can install it. And the way they have the keys connected to the account is exactly like almost every MMO ever. From my understanding, what they're laying claim to is not much different that what MMOs do: what you create in the game is not yours to sell or make a profit off of. You also don't have the legal right to prevent others from using the content you upload to the sharing network (or any game-related content used outside of the game, such as screen caps and such); if you don't want people using it, don't share it, plain and simple.

maybe they'll ditch drm if enough people bitch about it.

look, DRM is going to stay around until somebody comes up with a better way to try to prevent theft of games. and while DRM pisses me off in general, given that there's most likely already over 200,000 pirated downloads of it out there (or an even astronomically larger number, given how popular it seems), i can't really fault them for wanting to take steps to try to prevent that. they just need to come up with something different.

for me, i'm willing to put up with it because i don't expect to have to reinstall it every fortnight. i am getting more than enough enjoyment out of it to counteract and bad DRM juju in my case.

as much as people such as RudieCantFail might not like it, i think the best way to do it in the future is to be required to log in to play, given that connectivity is only going to increase in the future, especially considering how much more social games are becoming.

regardless, i really must pitty those of you who aren't giving this game a chance just because of the DRM, because i am having so much fun with it. DRM aside, Wright has come up with another masterpiece of a game. it's like SimEvolution, if you will. while i might have some minor quibbles with some of the gameplay (mainly bonuses not stacking when fiddling with your species' bits once you gain legs, as they stack when you're in the cellular stage), but i am going to spend massive amounts of time play this game. it's a wonderful mixture of creature/building/vehicle designing, world exploring, and strategy with either gruesome or cute creatures (depending on how you build them) to shape.
