Has anyone seen this new Vampire show on HBO yet? I watched it Sunday night , it looks like it could be good if they do not screw it up.For some reason I never like most shows dealing with vampires, personally I do not like Buffy at least the show. And I never got into Kindred. I had first heard that HBO was bringing "Preacher " from vertigo /DC comics to the screen, but instead they came up with this show...guess we will see. I miss my old HBO , when Carnivale and Deadwood ruled the airwaves.

It's an interesting premise and I think it shows promise, but after only one hour it's impossible to judge how it's going to be in the long run.

I liked it and I'll continue watching, if only OnDemand.

Hate to change the subject. But I think I know what the OP feels toward this show.

I just saw Fringe and it was Meh.. Probably like True Blood.

I just think a show needs more episodes before we can fully judge it.

Also, needs more Joker ... if I know what you're thinking.

I find the premise fascinating, but wasn't totally hooked on the execution. But I like Anna Paquin, so I'll probably watch for at least another week or two.

I'm going to spoil my theory about next week ...

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
I think that she gets turned next week after the beating the trailer-trash drainer people put on her, and then the real fun begins.

I was actually pissed that I didn't wait longer to watch because, after it ended the way it did, I wanted to see more right away to know what happens next.

It's based on a pretty decent supernatural romance series by Charlaine Harris. I don't get HBO, so it'll be a while before I get to see how closely adapted it is.

But I doubt she'll be turning into a vampire if they intend on being even remotely faithful to the books. The point has kinda been her as mostly normal human being increasingly pulled into the weird and wooly realm of the supernatural community.

Why are vampires always portrayed as bags of overwrought sexual tension and goth fetishism?

I caught this yesterday. It started kinda slow but by the end of the first episode I really wanted to see the second so I guess I'm hooked. Not really invested or connected with the characters yet, but curious enough to want to see the next few episodes.

Because they are seductive due to their role as predators. They have to lure people to their doom, most of the time. Some just out and out attack and feed, sure, but that is never memorable. They are succubi with teeth.

In Aleister Crowley's poem, The Philosopher's Progress, verse 10:

I said : O vampire[1] Lover, weep,Who cannot follow me above,
Though Death may masquerade as Sleep,
And Lust laugh out lie Love.

[1]Any being who, under the guise of love, draws the strength from another.

Women and men can be portrayed as succubi and incubi, in that they "suck" the life force from a person. Said women and men can be SOs, politicians, priests, etc insofar as they are people that you trust at first.

A vampire as portrayed in True Blood is someone who seduces your trust and then uses you after you fall for the guise.

Now, sexual frustration is the easiest thing to manipulate and thus vampires use their persuasion with great ease towards that crutch. Sexuality and Darkness have always been intertwined, and recently have meld into a sub-culture of the gothic (meaning like the gothic architecture - which is like gothic literature - grotesque and mysterious in that it strays from the light and towards exploration of the darker inner self, cf. Mary Shelley).

Two words: Bela Lugosi. It was his famed interpretation (in Dracula) that made the vampire what you said.

Except that I have no sexual tension (as I am quite open about it) and don't do goth fetishism (opting for minimalism in my erotica).

the books this series is based on are good, in part, because the author frequently discards or mocks that cliche. the other reason the books are good is that the characters are interesting. having seen the first two episodes of True Blood, it seems like it's probably going to stick to those two principles as well... in which case, the show will be good.

the books revolve around a pretty Mary Sue-ish concept--an ingenue being drawn into and learning about the supernatural world. i'd be surprised if the show deviated from that.

Because that's what the myth of vampirism lends itself to. Penetration can be a bite or sex. The entire act of vampiric feeding is fairly obviously sexual, and often borderline rape. Imagine being a pretty decent human who is forced into that life. You'd be gothic, too. tongue

Any common monster type is suited to a particular allegory.

Werewolves to loss of control, whether through a personal addiction or mental illness.
Zombies to social upheaval and humanity's response to chaos.
Mummies to the innate urge all people have to kill Brendan Fraser.
