I giggled.

An artificial appropriation of different styles from different eras, the hipster represents the end of Western civilization - a culture lost in the superficiality of its past and unable to create any new meaning. Not only is it unsustainable, it is suicidal. While previous youth movements have challenged the dysfunction and decadence of their elders, today we have the "hipster" - a youth subculture that mirrors the doomed shallowness of mainstream society.

Is "hipster" a more specific classification than "emo"? What are those?

This movie was made 42 years ago All the hipsters in it don't dance, dress like assholes, and listen to a white rock band* play a song w/a riff stolen from another song that came out ten years before that, which itself was stolen from a black blues song**. And this was in the 1960's, when everything everyone under 30 did supposedly had some kind of counter-cultural meaning. Antonioni clearly hates this mentality, only he was original when he hated it. God, can't you people come up with anything original wink. But seriously, though, the kind of person described in that article existed well before the 21st century, and sucked just as much back then. And I would know; I've been accused of the "H" word many, many times in my life blush...

every subculture ever invented is called the end of the fucking world, and no fashion or form of music has ever been created from nothing.

I thought a "hipster" was just a person that thought they were cool.
Because they have Prius a Macbook Air and iPhone 3G?

Also somebody that shops at Banana Republic and raves about Juno.

And the tapas they could have been eating...

i've said this before elsewhere, but the folks at adbusters should take a good long look in the mirror -- the truest sign of hipsterdom is is talking shit about everything, especially other hipsters.

Didn't the dandies from the 1880s-1920s already kill global culture? Did I miss another memo?

Emo kids are teenagers. When they graduate high school and go to college, they realize the emo trend is too "corporate". They sell their Hot Topic gear, buy suspenders and become hipsters.

Now, I've got to go kill myself now for paying too close attention to scenes.

"She was a hipster/and a real gone girl/she was pretty/from New York City/ And we trucked on down, that old highway/with a heave, and a hoe/and I just couldn't let her go"

One of my favorite Johnny Burnette songs; didn't realize Tiny Bradshaw had been the first to record it. I'll have to check it out.

And, on other news; yah, these type of people have ALWAYS been around. I personally wonder how the author of the first piece could even think that they are a modern trend. I mean, its not like they haven't always been prominent.

I think you are thinking of yuppies. The hipsters I'm immersed in try to seem as broke as possible. PBR, burritos, fixed gear bikes, etc. Maybe that's just SF though.

that sounds more like the hipsters I'm familiar with. I'd also add "geek chic" and tattoos.
