I have had an experience that I can't explain. Many people can't explain how their car works, but it doesn't work by magic. People still don't know exactly how lightning works, but I can pretty much guess it's not due to magic. Not being able to explain something does not mean it's magic, it just means more research is needed.

By that standard, I don't think even practitioners of magic would claim that what they do is magic. "Magic" would simply mean some force that isn't quite understood yet.

That I agree with.

OK, everybody can pick their jaws up off the floor.

This may not be the best example, but it's the best I can come up with right now. Take the example of monks who can wrap themselves in wet sheets, on a mountain in winter, and actually dry the sheets with their bodies by controlling their metabolism. Is that incredible? Hell, yeah! Is is "magic" or "supernatural"? No.

That example of supposedly mystical power can be repeated under controlled conditions, and therefore is subject to scientific inquiry. Herein lies my disdain for religion and mysticism in general. Science does not require worship, offerings or prayer. Science looks at something it cannot understand and attempts to understand it. Religion further mystifies it and makes it "Sacred", so that further inquiry is considered blasphemous in the extreme, and generally discouraged in general.

My mystical experience?

A man who I had never met before, or since, described in extreme and precise detail a ring I had lost several years before. He claimed to be a "seer", meaning he could see objects, and a very small area around it. He described to me finding a wedding ring for a nurse at a hospital he worked at, who had lost it while at work. He was the father of a friend of a friend, that we drove 3 hours on a whim to go see, so there is 0% chance that this person knew anything about me or the ring, nor had my friend or his friend ever seen or heard about the ring. I have no explanation for this, but I believe that someday, even these seemingly incredible instances will be explained through study. Science has proven over and over again that it works. Religion, notsomuch...

Do you need to do this to every thread that has anything to do with any religion ever? We get it. You don't like religions. This may be a brave and radical stance where you come from, but in the wide world of the internet its been done and done better. I, for one, could care less how you feel about religion and am tired of watching you derail every thread that has anything to do with it.

No. Try ignore. Works great.

I've had you on ignore for months. I'm just tired of every thread that has anything to do with religion looking like this:

Get a new shtik.

No.

OOhhh SNAP! Voodoo thread! Right up my alley!...

A must see: Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti. Excellent and beautiful footage of rituals, etc. filmed by Maya Deren between 1947 and 1952.

(In my opinion...)David Lynch wouldn't exist as a film maker if it weren't for Maya Deren. Lynch fans Wikipedia Deren and check out her independent filmography.

(PS: Shameless self-promotion: check out my creepy-baby-voodoo dollies in my pics. Not many posted yet. More to come.) skull skull skull

My parents are from Haiti and I tend to stay away from stuff involving Vodoo... Ever since I was a child though, my mom had me clean out my hair brush after I used it so that no one would be able to steal my hair and place a curse on me. That kind of like stuck with me and I tend to dispose of my hair very carefully.
