I will start off by saying that I am not deaf, but I am studying ASL (American Sign Language for those of you who don't know the acronym.).

Part of my class involves going out to deaf community social events ie; ice cream socials, deaf expos, and anything else. Well, today I went to the California School For The Deaf in Fremont for their open house. What a completely amazing and awesome place that is. Very very nice campus (It's way nicer than my college campus.), and it just all around had a nice feel to it. Visiting it today has put me in quite an interesting (But good.) mood. I got a kick out of seeing people communicate through sign language and twice saw something that I had actually kind of forgotten about... I saw two blind & deaf people communicating with people by feeling the movements of another person's hands while they were signing. That is simply just awesome.

I started to take ASL because I was horrible at languages such as Spanish and it was reccomended. This class does not only teach how to read and sign, sign language, it also goes into the history and whatnot of deaf culture. This class has turned out to be one of my most interesting and favorite classes I have ever had and I absolutely enjoy it.

Well without going into too much other B.S. that most of you won't want to hear anyway, I will get to my point... I was just wondering if there were any deaf people that frequented this site?

deaf culture IS amazing. i took four semesters of ASL in college and 1/4 of our studies focused on the culture. we also visited the local school for the deaf for a basketball game and talent show.
the last semester consisted entirely of field trips where we were not allowed to speak. we dealt with discrimination at a local restaurant, went on a picnic with the deaf fishers association (seriously), etc.
i want a deaf friend, too. smile

Wow. Crazy.

I've been toying with the notion of taking ASL. We have what seems to be a pretty decent sized deaf community here in Madison and I get hearing impaired customers all the time at work that are forever having to write things down for us. They're really patient in trying to explain to us what they need, though. biggrin

One of my friends is legally deaf. He used to turn off his hearing aids when his ex-girlfriend would start bitching! biggrin

He went to special schools and has lots of deaf friends, but hates the local deaf community because they tend to want not mingle with the hearing. Some of his ex-friends stopped talking to him when he started dating a hearing girl.

That being said, I'd often thought about learning ASL.

I love ASL. I took it for two years in high school, and we had to go to deaf events as well. Our teacher was deaf, he was awesome. Second year, we couldn't talk at all, and I loved it! I was able to help deaf customers at work a few times, and I met these awesome deaf guys at a ren faire and talked to them for ages, it was great.

When I got to college though, the one I went to didn't offer it, and now I've forgotten most of the language. frown I'd love to get back into it.

i went to the Rochester Institute of Technology which has one of the alrgest deaf schools in the country, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I actually was friends with two deaf people who could speak. At RIT there was alot of deaf racism. it could get pretty frightening. the only thing that scared me was when i would walk across campus and see two people in the front seat of a moving car signing to each other. They were signing and driving. that was a little freaky.

One of the sluttier girls at RIT, she was actually really nice and cool and totally admitted to being a slut, actually was one of NIN's go-go type dancers on the 1994 tour.

When I first saw this thread last night I wanted to say, "well, I usually don't listen to a damn thing people say... that's sorta like being deaf." but I think I'd already fulfilled my snark quotient for the night, especially with that move I pulled over in the tied up and spanked thread.

i have deaf friend.

but i can't sign, so we have to write back and forth on a pad of paper. it's not good because i can't spell and my handwriting blows. plus i feel bad for taking so long writing, so i over simplify what i'm writing. he probably thinks i'm lame with no sence of humour.

but seriously... it's too bad, because he's hot and i would date him if it was more practical...

I don't know sigh-language, but wish I did. I was in a play once where my character was deaf and mute. I had this wonderful lady teach me to sign all of my dialogue.

It was an awesome experience. blush

I went to prom with a deaf friend. I also, am unfortunately quite hearing disabled.
I have severe tinnitus, and have damaged my hearing irreversably. It is hard to explain to people, how it effects my life. It almost seems like the general sentiment is "so what? You are the dumbass who unintentionally damaged your own hearing."
But it is not like I can actually hear anyone say that to me. Otherwise I would probably agree with them. smile

My grandfather has tinnitus. Every conversation with him goes like this:

"How are you, grandad?"

"Fine, except for this ringing in my ear."

Three hour lecture.
