I still remember when I first saw Once Were Warriors. It was terrifying. it was not only the downfall of a family through abuse but it also was showed how far a powerful people, The Maori, had fallen.

Once Were Warriors is the story of a New Zealand family descended from Maori warriors and is bedeviled by a violent father and the societal problems of being treated as outcasts.

Rena Owen plays the mother of the family, Beth Heke who loves her husband no matter how hard he beats her and her children.

i hate to tell you this, but there is no such word as "maorian". you're maori, not maorian.

however i am glad you interviewed rena owen. i remember at the time this movie came out my drama teacher said to me, "you're the next rena owen" and i scoffed, but after some years i realise that she really did a good job with that role.

I have only found a few people in my circle who have seen Once Were Warriors. But it really moved me. I'm telling you I cried like a baby. I'm almost scared to see it again because I get so emotional. It was beautifully done. I cheered when Beth went to lay her daughter to rest in her rightful place. I didn't know, however, that it was a book.. I just may have to check it out.

My friend Kiwi told me. He's from New Zealand. wink

Yes, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted.

It's nowhere near as good as the first, though.

Haha, yes, I was going to say something about "Maorian".

I loved Once We were Warriors. It made me cry. I'm glad it will be out on DVD so I can watch it again and skip the really rough rape scene. I feel the scene was done as tastefullly as you can with the subject but still makes you feel deeply for the young girl. I just can't watch it again.

Rena Owen rocks, I hope to see her in more films.

Once Were Warriors is one of the best films i've ever seen and New Zealand is, as Rena Owen puts it, God's Own. There's nothing more beautiful than that place....

BTW, anybody see What Becomes of the Broken HEarted, the sequal? I heard it's pretty bad, but i'm just wondering.

I saw her a few years ago in a play called Haruru Mai by Briar Grace Smith & she was amazing.. proved that she isn't just limited to film.
