In addition to what plaingurl is saying, my step-sister died just over a year ago, and there is never a day goes past that I don't feel sad.

Yeah, I knew I would get responses like this if I didn't mention that my dad also died when I was 17. Now, if you'll go back and read what I posted, you'll notice I said "totally" fucked up. **Totally.** Difference between being sad and missing someone and being dibilitated and unable to go on with your life. That's what I meant.

How about when the relationship has ended and you know you will never be with somebody ever again.

nothing abnormal about taking your time getting over someone. at least you know you are capable of loving someone, otherwise it wouldn't hurt for so long. If that helps. the proper length of time, well, that's tough. It's the amount of time it takes for you to notice others without pain and longing for the first person. Sorry you're feeling badly. One of the things that makes it worse is people saying "get over it" cause it's been so long. And any other "helpful" advice. don't listen to anyone tell you how to feel. You need to feel that way to deal with it. miss them for however long you want. You are allowed to have any time you need. all yours.

The one-year limit is almost magically accurate for me.
