I have a years-old collection of National Geographic magazines arching back to the late seventies, given to me by my Aunt last week. There is a small section of my local library that has every volume, save for a few lost in a library fire in 1965.

Isn't this magazine simply fantastic? The most recent headline article on Iran's social identity has been by far the best reporting I've seen all month on that subject.

Be heard here. Tell about your favorite article(s) throughout the years, or favorite pictures, or perhaps how Nat'l Geo has inspired you.

I will always love Nat Geo, just like I love any and all channels on cable that deal with animals and the Earth.

When I was in high school, I wanted to be a reporter for NGL. I thought that would be the epitome of coolness.

National Geographic has taught generations of young men that breasts are not cone-shaped torpedos. tongue

Seriously great. I grew up in a household that had a bookcase with a couple of shelves devoted to National Geographic. Apart from being the source of my first glimpse of non-mom boobs I of course learned loads of other great stuff from that magazine.

I cannot remember the issue but there is one from either the late seventies or early eighties that has a person on the cover grinning at the camera with all sorts of face paint and a head dress and crazy jewelry, it always scared me as a kid. I used to think it was a native WOMAN but now I am pretty sure it was a native DUDE with feminine features. Either way, the grin was kind of maniacal and creeped me out.

Because I am short on space I only keep the issues that I really like these days (of course I have my own subscription now that I am out on my own!) but it hurts my heart every time I throw an old one away - I just cannot justify keeping a lot of them because I move every year or two. Now that I work in an office I will probably just start bringing the old ones into the break room. At least someone should read the ones I don't keep to re-read!

Donate your back-issues to schools, libraries, and homeless shelters, or as a very last resort, use them for collages.
