The big downtime issue... you mean when the LADWP accidentally cut the grid to all of downtown Los Angeles for a few hours and some stuff got fried? MediaTemple went down then too. So did a shitload of things hosted in LA.

That day sucked so much (the emergency lights didn't come on in my office building and we lit our way down 8 flights of stairs with cellphones). However, it also led to a lot of off-grid capabilities being put in or upgraded at most of the downtown LA hosting centers.

I meant this.

Though like I said before, it's led them to become a lot more transparent about their operations since.

You do realize, of course that the only difference between Dreamhost and any other hosting provider, in that respect, is that Dreamhost blogs about their downtime, right?

Having a massively-scalable virtualhosting grid is fancy, and it's great (in theory) if your mom-and-pop shop suddenly turns into the next eBay

But that's exactly my point. It's what I said in my original post, that it's much better when you need a website to scale. And this is exactly the problem with Hahlo, which has now become a huge service that would function better if it were on this service instead of being disabled without warning.

I acknowledge that for the OP any of the companies mentioned will work fine, I said so in my original post. My point is when and why you wouldn't want to go with a shared host.

Okay, at this point I'm just going to have to say that your particular problem with Dreamhost is utterly meaningless to.. oh... damn near everyone who uses a $5/month Dreamhost account. surreal

Considering that they renamed the file to ".disabledByDreamhost" I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they disabled it because he was doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing.

popular new iPhone app plus PHP plus twitter API plus shared hosting.

if that isn't a recipe for melted servers, i don't know what is.

I totally agree. As I said, dude shouldn't be paying for the cheap stuff that's built for everyday people when he's got an app that is likely to explode.

Oh, and also, you could have just said "yes," since this is the particular event that triggered the meltdown: "At around 5:21pm, on Saturday July 22nd, a brown out occurred due to record high temperatures in downtown Los Angeles. Voltage dropped due to the high demand of electrical current along with equipment failure operated by the Department of Water and Power, City of Los Angeles. This condition caused failure of "ATS-B" switch and to UPS Module #3. Engineering crews were dispatched and began repair of this damaged equipment. A power interruption was required to replace contacts in "ATS-B"."

"Yes" would imply that was the only problem. As you've read, it wasn't.

That was the "big downtime issue." The other problems were minor outages, quality-of-service problems and stuff being a little borked here and there.

And here's why calling Dreamhost out on that stuff drives me nuts: that stuff happens all the damn time, to everyone. It's just that, most of the time, either it doesn't appreciably affect customers or most of them don't notice. Something that's considered a "catastrophic problem" to an engineer might not even show up as a blip to a customer. If a hosting provider who leases space from a data center has one of their three upstream providers drop a router and they lose that connection entirely, that's a huge fucking problem, but they might be able to route all the traffic from those networks over the other upstream connections, so customers might notice their site loading a half second slower.

i remember one time WoW's beta servers got taken out by a tornado.

i think at that point Blizzard had an idea of how successful the game was going to be and just outright bought the God of Wind.

Clearly they weren't leasing space from DirectNIC's data center.

To re-iterate, I'd check them out.

Secondly, I get total immense boners for promotional codes/coupons, and there's so many to be had for Dreamhost that will save you money:

I use Laughing Squid. I haven't had any issues, and whenever I've needed help with something, they have real live people that get back to you quite quickly. Reasonable prices, too. And, come on, it's called Laughing Squid - you can't not love it.

I can neither confirm nor deny Laughing Squid is a good web host, but Scott Beale (and his parties) are awesome, and for that alone I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Yea, they work. I mean, you can test them before purchasing. I forget the one I used but basically the upfront cost for a year was barely $30. But I also went for a hosting plan that's more than I need because of a special, and some eventual plans. You could probably get something spiffy for cheaper.
