We've all seen the "Princess" merchandise Disney's been pushing hard the past couple of years. They're T-shirts, lunchboxes, backpacks, covered in pink and purple with depictions of Disney's famous, frilly royalty. Something like this:

They've recently released a trailer for their upcoming film "The Princess and the Frog," a fairytale centered around a young Princess Tiana living in New Orleans during the 20s. She is voiced by Anika Noni Rose, best known for her role as Lorrell Robinson in "Dreamgirls."

Princess Tiana is the first black princess in Disney's history, and she follows in the footsteps of minority princesses Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan.

Poor dental plan. I'm just trying to figure out when there was a Princess in New Orleans. Does it have something to do with Mardi Gras?

Mulan wasn't a princess, either, nor were Bell and Cinderalla.

Pocahontas was, I think, but she doesn't have enough shiny clothing and gewgaws to justify inclusion in the princess club, I guess.

Is it wrong of me that I half-expected a character to be in blackface in that trailer? frown

those posters crack me up; specifically how the ad compnay insists on blinding white teeth in the middle of a firefight.

Yeah but in the case of the first two, they ended up marrying the prince so they got a free pass to princessland. No idea how Mulan wound up there though, unless it's all a popularity contest.

According to this bit, Pocahontas is, in fact, a part of the club.

Mulan doesn't need to be a princess; she's a hero of her people, which is way better. Plus, she hooked up with the first Disney character with nipples! </inane trivia>

Pretty sure Ariel's dad had them too, then there were the Hercules weird spiral looking nipples. And according to a friend, there were some in Fantasia as well. But I can't be bothered to look. So apparently they'll let anyone in that club nowadays.

I vividly remember there being no nipples in Fantasia. The centaurs looked so weird all nippleless.

I'm Cajun. I have all of my teeth.

You know, FYI and stuff. surreal

Part of me hates when movies of any kind are set in NOLA, and part of me loves it. Does anyone else feel that way about movies set in their hometown?

I'm just really reaaaally happy to see a new cell animated Disney film.

CGI is great, but the hand drawn stuff is the best.

Yes, unless it's a Singaporean movie. Foreign filmmakers always seem to focus on local Asian exotica, which of course conveys next to nothing about life here.

my roommate is from new orleans and can do that accent perfectly whenever he wants. it's pretty much totally awesome to have him around and drunk enough to do it.
