I'm not a connoisseur, but...
What is the appeal? I know it's cheap and on tap and the cans have a pretty blue label...
Or did I just answer my own question?

From what I understand, it's a 20-something hipster deal to drink it. I believe they think they're being ironic by drinking it. But who knows? Maybe young urban people who drink PBR actually like it.

I'm a young 20-something southern belle who quite likes PBR. In the south (not to feed into stereotypes..maybe its this way everywhere) good ole cheap skunky beer is prized. i'm poor, it's cheap. i like rolling rock for the same reasons. If i want cheap cold and skunky light beer, i want pbr or rr. if i want something darker for a buck or two more, i want sam adams. its just a thing. However, where i live, miller high life is the cheap ironic beer of choice for hipster-be's. go figure.

It's decent tasting inexpensive beer. So is High Life, so is Schmidt's....

I don't know why PBR is the spokes-beer for the kids these days....but it is. But I don't think people would drink it if it tasted like piss. Well, scratch that...people DO drink Hieneken....so there's no accounting for taste.

I agree with this. In Mississippi, PBR is just another decent cheap beer. High life is definitely the hipster beer there. In Portland, PBR seems to be the major hipster beer, but for me, it's a beer that tastes better and is much cheaper than most of the other pisswater American lagers that are out there.

In the beginning it was popular among the punks and hipsters because it was cheap and it had some sort of working class appeal to it. Now everyone drinks it because for some reason it became trendy, sorta like mesh caps. Pretty soon all the hipsters and punks will be drinking heineken to avoid being trendy, but only till heineken becomes trendy again then they can go back to drinking pbr. I could care less about the whole thing, I personally like strohs better, you can get a thirty pack of it for $15 and it tastes pretty good. smile

I didn't know it was hip to drink PBR. But that would explain why its the only beer to be found in EVERY club/bar/venue in Denver. Shoulda known... I have ethical issues with Coors, Miller beers are nauseous to me, and I like it better than Bud. I'm young urban people, and I drink it because its the cheapest thing on tap that doesn't taste like ass. Hey, if you could get harp, bass, or moosehead at as many places as PBR, I'd definitely pay the extra.

I don't like PBR, but (a) I don't like any beers and (b) I'm far from hip. No, really, I read The Hipster Handbook, and it says I'm not hip.

Me not liking beer does contribute to my bar tabs being considerably higher than most college kids'. To balance it out, I can't hold my liquor. Two gin & tonics, a cosmo, and a shared Long Island iced tea and I am drunk.

Follow that with another shared Long Island iced tea and a martini (which for some reason was cloudy and brown), and I am puking in the public restroom toilet.

Ah, good times.

When I moved to Cali I purchased a 24 pack of PBR, and drank all but one. It remained in the vegetable cripser for about 2 1/2 years. The last day I was a Cali citzen me and my roomie broke that bitch out and split it. I'll be damned if it wasn't better after aging than when new. We ate the box of Arm & Hammer too.

it tastes like piss, but i'd probably still rather drink it than miller low life because of the disparity between the headache intensities. kids do drink a disproportionally large amount of PBR, so that leads me to believe that it is indeed hipper than its piss-beer competitors. that and i've seen it at bars in LA and NY for up to 5 dollars a can. yeah. a can. you can almost get a 12 pack for that much. i used to drink 2 40s of old e, and get real fucked up for under 5 bucks. but now i'm a little bit older, and if i can't afford to get drunk on something that doesn't taste like piss, i just won't get drunk. oh wait, yeah i do. fuck. ignore everything i just said.

I prefer Belgians and Microbrew, But PBR is quite good. Compare other beers in it's class. Better than Bud, worlds apart from Miller and high steps above many others.
