Looking back, was there something about you that wasn't quite 'normal'?

For me, it was my taste in men (among other tales of irregularity).

When I was very little, one of my first-ever movie crushes was Beetlejuice.

BEETLEJUICE!

Beetlejuice, for fuck's sake. I used to tell my mum how he swept me off my feet.

Tell me that isn't funny.

No...as far as I can recall...and back up with familial anecdotes....I was your garden-variety suburban, middle-class kid.

I was seen as weird for the time and place. When other little boys were playing with trucks, I was reading books. I had a full set of toy farm equipment, but I rarely used it, and finally sold it when I was about 10. I wasn't interested in sports, which nearly made me an outcaste.

So yeah, in the context of small-town Nebraska, I was a weird kid.

Yes. I was the quintessential weird boy in school, at all times.

My childhood crushes were Spock, Davy Jones from the Monkees, Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands, and David Bowie in Labyrinth. (I totally stand by those last two.)

I loved The Wizard of Oz so much that there was a brief period before kindergarten when I refused to answer to anything but Dorothy.

When I was about 5, my favorite songs were "Physical" by Olivia Newton John and "Pop Music" by M. (I had about 100 45s that my parents bought for me at a garage sale, and I listened to them on my Fisher Price record player nonstop.)

I was terrified of tomatoes because I thought eating them made the tornado sirens go off. I had a doll named Diarrhea (hey, I thought it was a pretty name), and called the affliction diarrhea "the ballerinas."

Is that weird?

Hahaha, oh dear. To be a kid again, to think that such a word is pretty.

Johnny Depp is always hot, no matter what. And you've got a point with Labyrinth, but for some reason I never saw it til high school.

I used to go up to strangers and tell them how bad it was to drop litter. When I was about three. Telling off strangers. Yep.

I read the entire occult / paranormal section at the public library by age 12. Librarians give little kids weird looks when they check out books on Demonology.

Used to decorate my school books with posters from fangoria/gorezone etc. Turns out, teachers frown on decapitation and stuff. Who knew? smile

My first crush was honestly Billy Idol, and to this day in some really sick way he is kinda sexy. I used to cut the limbs of my barbies, shave their heads, when I was 9 I asked for a 9MM and got one, for my 10th bday I got a 38special, I was a little boy most of my life. I was also the smartest kid in my class and I would spend hours everyday doing extra credit work to get better than my A , I loved school, to everyone else that was weird. I also used to get up every morning at 3am to watch Welcome back Kotter.

For me the big fall out of early 1982 with my sister over whether Stevie Wonder was black or brown should've been an early sign of doom.

I removed the brown crayon from my Crayola box as my proof, waved it around and insisted I was right.

I read the encyclopedia for fun.

And my parents had to pay me to go outside and play with other kids (I was/am pretty shy). Instead of playing with the other neighborhood kids I would ride my bike to a greenbelt and read mysteries until my obligatory 2 hours of time were up and then I would return home and tell stories about the "friends" I played with.

Oh yeah , fuck dictionaries . Encyclopedias were definitely where it was at . Especially the one's with the big , glossy pages in them . Like the stacked pages of the human body where turning a page would remove the skin , then the muscles , etc . Encyclopedias also turned me on to mythology , heraldry , swords & armor . All kinds of great shit .

Wow, I though I was the only kid who liked to read encyclopedias. I read 2 sets, cover to cover. One from the 50's and my parents actually bought me a set. Got 4 new ones every month, and I'd have them read in time for the next ones to show up.

Yes and no, but I was happy with who I was then, just as I am now. If that made/makes me weird then I was/am a fucking three headed, six-armed, multi-sexed, extra-dimensional being.
