The Shins are your favorite band you probably haven't heard yet. Since their 2001 debut Oh, Inverted World on Sub Pop Records they have been poised to be the next big thing. With their new album, Chutes Too Narrow, The Shins catchy pop melodies are so infectious the World Health Organization should issue a warning. I caught up with singer James Mercer right after he found out his identity had been stolen, or at least I think it was him...

Missy Suicide: I heard the new album and I am in love...

inverted world was on REPEAT at my newspaper office a year and a half ago.

james mercer really hit the Smiths/Quasi wavelength of making the goddamn catchiest tunes paired with existentialist/depressive lyrics.

Great, great band with a bright future.

Surprisingly, the album debuted at #86 on Billboard's Top 100. I had no idea they were that well-known.

They are super cool. I was music supervisor on a short film and got them to let us use "New Slang" for free! Also caught James Mercer at the Knitting Factory in LA and he was amazing. Great voice and great chops (do people still use that term?)

Anyway if yer in the So Cal area they're playing in Long Beach at ATP!

I love the Shins --- can't believe I didn't catch this article sooner, so I could have swooned to my hearts content on the message boards. One last thing --

"never go cold wearing nothing in the snow", well, unless you're a SG doing a winter shoot. wink

the album is perfect in every way, I even quoted it in my masters thesis.... weird. Besides that blue really matches my couch well.
