Most likely both, as in "I am a writer, in that I like to write and I try to hone my skills. I want to be a professional writer and get paid for it." At least that is how it is for me. Both at the same time.

She wanted to be a writer and started writing about it. Once she did that, she became a writer. She should have asked for a million dollars while she was at it. Hindsight....oh well.
I have a feeling that this just isn't going to garner anything useful. SG is a lot of things but it isn't a resource for psychology experiments or other class projects.
