Most likely both, as in "I am a writer, in that I like to write and I try to hone my skills. I want to be a professional writer and get paid for it."

At least that is how it is for me. Both at the same time.

That makes absolutly no sense in this context. I'm not getting paid for my writing, so I should just stop?

She wanted to be a writer and started writing about it. Once she did that, she became a writer.

She should have asked for a million dollars while she was at it.
