Which "frat bar" are you talking about? I just moved from between B & C a few months ago and there was no Starbucks when I lived there.

If they close the bars at 2 a.m. everyone may as well give up and move to LA.

the frat bar is the 'croxley ale house' just went up where 'pierrot' used to be, and the starbucks, sorry, is actually called the 'downtown uptown coffeehouse' it just LOOKS exactly like a starbucks, and it will open next week, i think. i have to pass all this shit daily on my way to work at ace, which has nearly become a frat bar itself.

Wake me up when they start closing museums, parks, restaurants and concert venues, okay?

[Edited on Oct 14, 2003 by Uncognitive]

maybe you haven't heard, but they already are. museums and parks have been forced to cut back hours, days, services, free or 'pay what you can' days, etc. ad infinitum. and restaurants have gone the way of the national chain (quizno's) or just generally crappy, overpriced hipster fare that takes over what used to be cheap cuchifritos (alias on clinton comes to mind). concert venues??? there's hardly any left (coney island high, northsix almost got it) or would you rather go to the roseland or hammerstein where you get gouged at every corner?

excuse me, uninformed person of undeterminate race and color, but spanish harlem is populated primarily by puerto ricans, some dominicans, and african-americans. very few mexicans, although i can see how the brown tint must have confused a genius such as yourself. see, i know this as moved to spanish harlem 8 years ago, and have seen the gentrification of the neighborhood first-hand. they are fighting it, valiantly, however, and have managed to hold on to their homes better than most in the city. now shut up and educate yourself first before you go spouting off at that orifice in your face.

Whoa, there, waxy. Perhaps you're uninformed about how it goes around here. See, UnnecessaryZ says something slightly insulting but mostly funny. Then you post back something else that's almost funny, but can't compete with what UnnecessaryZ said. You don't let it get you all in some tiffy, as it appears that it has done.

What UnnecessaryZ really said, interpreted by me, was, "Hey, man, lighten up, I got this funny comment to make that may cheer you up a little." And then what you seem to have said was, "Hey, shut up fuckface, or I'll fucking bash your fucking head in." Again, that was interpreted by me.

The sad part about the whole New York thing is that this is what everyone wants. And, by everyone, I mean the rich. And they run the show. Anyone who tells you differently is a moron. So, unless you're rich and can fight back, move to another city. Or don't be so judgemental. Have a coffee at Starbucks. It's something I'll never do, but I can't help but recommend it to everyone I don't like.

And the White Stripes does play real music. It may not be what you like, but it is real. In the sense that Jack White plucks the guitar and sounds come out that people generally find agreeable. That's music. But maybe your head is too far up your ass to realize that your opinion is not fact.

Move to Brooklyn.

No, really. Plenty of non-chain non-hipster restaurants and several concert venues as well. If you're going to live in a trendy neighborhood that's been gentrified for the past 15 years or more, you shouldn't expect it to not attract chain stores and trendy hipster cafes. There's more to NYC than Manhattan.

interesting, i don't find being referred to as "pussy" and "frightened white boy" all that funny. especially by someone who has no idea what he's talking about. and since Z-boy doesn't know me in the slightest, there was absolutely no reason to be insulting at all, even slightly. although i guess it's much easier to be provocative on the computer than in real life.

and by "real" music, i mean something that's not a total rip-off of Robert Johnson, or pretty much any other innovative delta blues musician. yes, in a strictly technical sense, jack white does make music, or at least sound, but i don't consider it all that groundbreaking, and i AM entitled to that opinion, head up my ass or not.

and i lived in brooklyn for years, as well, and now can't afford it, so i live in a dumpy little closet in manhattan because it's rent controlled. plus williamsburg/greenpoint/bushwick make me gag.

You really don't find someone you don't know calling you a pussy, over an internet chat board, with no way of knowing whether you are or not, and little way of meeting you and finding out, funny? I find it very amusing. If you were to call me a pussy, and mean it in the way I'm sure UnnecessaryZ meant it, then I would shrug and say, "Oh." I wouldn't laugh, but I would be content in the knowledge that someone, somewhere would laugh. And the phrase "frightened white boy" struck me as one of the funniest from this thread. It's right up there with "el blanco nino" (I don't know how to put the little tilde above the n, but you know what I mean). Mayhap you should lighten up a bit. I do apologize for getting so riled up about your lack of humour, though, as I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. As I only have one side to my bed on which it is possible to wake, you can see the problem I had.

Jack White didn't rip off Robert Johnson. Well, he didn't rip off Robert Johnson alone. See, he did what's referred to as a "cover," ie, the playing of another person or band's song, as a way of saying, "Hey, that was a really great song, I dug it, let's see if I can do it some justice." He acknowledges that he covers other people's songs in the liner notes. No, he's not doing anything groundbreaking, but I've never heard him say he was. I'm sure he's said it, because he's extremely arrogant, but I've never heard it. In fact, the only groundbreaking stuff I've heard come out of this century so far has been from the Postal Service, a band I admire but don't necessarily listen to. And "groundbreaking" seems to be giving too much credit to anyone. Isn't all the ground broken already?

Anyway, you need to lighten up. And you are entitled to your opinion; I never said you weren't. I just said you need to remember that your opinion isn't fact. Neither is mine. In fact, mine's even less fact than yours, because I am ignorant. But that's another discussion.

This seems to happen every other week. The silver lining is that they usually end up being my friend. Madking, however, has achieved this apparently without wanting to kill me first.

PS - Wax, I've said it before, but I come to the Lifestyle board to be an ass. If you ever see me say something offensive in the Current Events board, by all mean, begin acting like a retard with a quick trigger finger. And if it matters to you that much, I am of Hispanic/German heritage and raised in a black family. I have a white mom, black dad, and two loving black brothers. Basically what that means is I can say whatever the fuck I want without really offending anyone...if I'm crafty about it. Generalizing mex-I-cans with other brown people was crafty.

I don't know how to put the little tilde above the n

in windows98, you go in keyboard properties and add a Spanish keyboard , then have fun pressing random keys on your new spanish keyboard to find it. and you can even make a hotkey to switch on the fly between american and spanish keyboard, so to always have it handy to add the tilde to the n.
for other versions, I still have to find out.
of course, I guess you can search an ASCII code and type it as ALT+####
