Ha! I read a bit of this thread in the middle of the night last night and I thought to myself after bean's comment: This is the point in the thread where Saraah comes in and defends TCK while insinuating that the reason people on SG don't find him funny is because they just don't "get" it.

Then I wake up, and viola! Like magic.

It's true, I don't "get" unfunny jokes. The problem clearly lies with us, the readers.

Yes, we all have a role to play. And apparently you also like playing the viola? You are multi-talented!

I never said people didn't find him funny because they didn't get it, in fact, I specifically said that it's totally reasonable to have a difference of opinion about what is funny or not. But it is unreasonable to even acknowledge that something is comedy-writing, funny or not.

But do you recognize or "get" the difference between sincerity and a broad, obvious attempt at humor? Sadly... you do not.

The "red hair" joke was funnier, but it's nice to see you workshopping your shit.

Dude, I don't take that shit lightly. I'll punch up a text message if I see a better version. You may be right, I liked the red hair line a lot.

I think this thread is funny now that Alicia Keys is no longer the punchline.

But, saraah, just to show there's no hard feelings...

"Floppy Shoes" would have been fine. Adding the "Giant" is just overkill.

I'm bad at speeling! Lolz!

Of course, you'll note that bean was not saying TCK's piece wasn't "comedy-writing", but saying it wasn't "funny". When he said that, I'm pretty sure he was referencing the original post, not TCK's self-depreciating little barb about spewing nonsense. So, in a sense, you weren't allowing him to have a reasonable disagreement as to what was funny. Bean and papawheelie were simply saying they didn't find the original post funny, and you sarcastically called them "genuises" for holding that opinion. Then you closed your post with a lament as to how SG isn't a great forum for understanding comedy, which is where I got the "getting" it part.

I guess I just pointed it out because insulting TCK is something that you seem to take very personally. (Which, no offense to TCK, must get very exhausting.) I mean, at base I don't disagree with what you wrote, necessarily. It's just that you play this particular viola often.

Disagree with the overkill part.

But, hey, I do like that you've got a photo of the second best BNB (after the great Kelly Leak), as your profile pic.

First off, I was echoing Bean's use of "Genius" in my response.

Edited: I wrote a lot more, but it seems kinda pointless. I am setting down my viola. Enjoy the newswire everyone! For the record, here is one of my favorite LOLcats. For I do enjoy them, in their place.

No, genius, as a comedian, being funny is part of your job. See, I think that might be the confusion right there.

+1

Yeah, but, geniuses...that WAS funny. What he said: "as a comedian, spewing ignorance is part of my job"...that is clearly and delightfully a joke. Which was funny. You can say it wasn't funny TO YOU, but it was to me, and certainly it was obviously tongue in cheek, was that honestly not clear?

I think the confusion is taking a comedic piece on some hilariously misinformed and bizarre statements a b-list list celebrity made (to BLENDER, for crying out loud) and then trying to use the piece to have an actual conversation about racial politics and the author's knowledge of the history of the black panthers.

I kinda am beginning to realize SG is maybe not the place for comedy (of the non LOLcat/meme variety, which usually goes over like gangbusters), which bums me out, because they are my favorite pieces on the newswire. frown

agreed!

The rest of your response was insightful and in no way offensive. Her response to it was the most literal use of the "I'm taking my ball and going home, you unimportant people" defense I've seen in ages. You didn't need to apologize.

Huh? Who said it was "offensive"? Certainly not me. Perhaps it was that straw man over there.

Also, the word "literal"? It doesn't mean what you think it means.

Plus, I was trying to stop the bickering with a picture of a cat grabbing its genitals! That's totally playing ball....

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
LITERALLY! (see what I did there?)

Anyway, I thought it was very menschy of Subrosa to note and apologize for the part of our disagreement that was an actual misunderstanding. Don't worry, he still disagrees with me violently about everything else! And so it is, was, and shall ever be. Amen.

I had a witty and pertinent response, but a shoddy connection ate it alive. I don't feel too much like retyping it in its entirely, so I'll summarize.

Actually, Mos Def is kind of a nutball too. Don't get me wrong, he's an artist that I truly respect and really like a lot. (I've got most of his stuff.) He was on Real Time with Bill Maher one time, and he started going off about the whole twin towers conspiracy thing. He would not let it go!
