The Postal Service is two people: Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel and Figurine manning the electronics, and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie providing vocals and guitar. On their debut record, Give Up, Jimmy's icy new-wave synths provide an unlikely match for Ben's warm songwriting, but the combination works - resulting in one of the best, most beautiful indie records of the year. I was pleased to discover recently that, over the phone at least, Jimmy is as soft-spoken as his music:

Excellent interview. Just recently "discovered" the Postal Service by accident and I have to say, quite good.

that is such a good album, and i haven't seen an interview with either member, well, anywhere.

sg has the connections.

but what about the ubiquitous final "punk emo or goth" question?

that amuses (me).

Good job, as always, KD. I think I like "Give Up" more than the new Deathcab album. Of course i was a lame-o when PS played town, and missed it...damn school, damn edumacation...anyway, thanks for landing another interesting interview.

I really hate the fact that the article never mentions the third member, Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley. She was also with the guys from the beginning. And yep, its the same Jenny Lewis that was in a lof of early 90s films.

yeah she's awesome and the songs wouldn't be the same w/out her.

this is rather silly...when i went to see them about 2 years ago i had no idea what either of the guys looked like, or that jenny was the other singer. there were a few guys standing outside the venue by a van cause we got there super early. and i thought that *might* be them but i didn't know so i walked on by. but what i did notice was jenny lewis...i LOVED foxfire so i just thought "oh my god, she's in foxfire! eeee!" still didn't talk to her though. *sigh*

God, I saw these guys at Sasquatch Festival last year and my ribs were tying themselves in knots because I had such an automatic insatiable crush on Lewis from the audience. Her sheer presence on the stage knocked me a lil' senseless.

I heard deathcab first - not much of a fan. But my boyfriend got me into Postal Service about a year ago, I think I love him even more for it....

And just about a week ago I heard a familiar beat coming from the Jeep next to me so I turned down my Brand New mix cd and rolled the window down a little bit farther and it was the Postal Service!!!!! Makes me so happy to know I'm not the only one who listens to that stuff at top volume smile

Although, I must admit that for me their appeal is mainly based on their frightening similar sound to The Weakerthans whom I have loved for many years, imitation is the highest form of flattery is it not?

*girlish squeel*

i've known about this kick ass group years before it went all tv commercial soundtrack on the world. my friend burned me a copy confused of the yummy music that barely anyone had heard of, telling me that it's impossible to listen through the cd and not be smiling by the end (which is absolutely true biggrin )

don't worry about my copying, though. as soon as i was able, i busted it out there and bought my own copy and some postal paraphernalia (because you just gotta support what you love smile

keep rockin' hard.
