I should be used to this by now- it is all my fault...here I go trying to defend my eighties, class of 89 that is, but getting kind of senile- you know how that is when you get up in years....I don't even care about me and my cars...its all my fault, you know...its not like anyone just jumped out and and slammed the whole decade I grew up in or anything like that...and there are whole moments, when I am lucid or on topic that I actually care about what other people say...or maybe look up in the thread...or something....just all my fault....sorry...goodbye cruel world...AAAAghCHH

So, the 80s kicked off the need for mood stabilizers? biggrin

just how did this thread go from a celebration of a wonderfully craptastic 80's film to a full fledged crucification of aforementioned decade?

oh right, this is suicidegirls... where logical debate goes to die. again and again and again...

thanks, mistersatan.

Shush, back in your hole you! *whacks with stick*

I didn't get pubic hair until the mid 90's, so I will abstain from any sort of 80's bashing/defending. Also, I haven't seen the movie, and I drive an '02 Dodge Neon. I really don't belong in this thread at all, and have no useful input.

Is this where I post a lolcat or something?

high five for late model compact vehicles!

Don't slam the Eighties- It was one hell of a lot better time then now... Meth didn't exist yet....

What are you talking about? Meth was first synthesized from ephedrine in Japan in 1893 by chemist Nagayoshi Nagai. Crystallized methamphetamine was synthesized by Akira Ogata in 1919. In 1983 laws were passed in the United States prohibiting possession of precursors and equipment for methamphetamine production.

They talked about meth in the mandatory, "Here's Looking at You 2000 Workshops" - a precursor to DARE - in grade school. My hometown has been in a "meth epidemic" since the early 1980s. Not only was meth in abundance then as well as now, kids were well aware of it.

Cars went from being a means of transport, to being a way to express how much money you could afford to throw away.

Fixed. Not well, but it picks up the point smile

I haven't seen the movie in a real long time, I need to rent it.

I believe before South Park (I could be wrong), Retarded Animal Babies parodied the movie a couple of years ago. I thought it was so funny.

When he looks at a billboard advertisement, the glasses show it as actually saying "OBEY". I'm sure the significance of this isn't lost on some of you.

the best is that Shepard Fairey actually did a print of that scene. They had the retired stencil of it at his show in L.A. this past winter:

Well, thanks to this thread I have finally seen the movie. I don't know how I never heard of it before. (I'm a class of '89 kid myself)

Of course Bostonbootgirl and I were getting stewed on vodka for the movie. We even paused it to write "THIS IS YOUR GOD" on all the cash we had.

Thanks for the recommendation.

It's such a good movie. Carpenter doesn't get near the credit he deserves for being able to make total popcorn movies that have layers. For instance, the movies also deftly skewers the vapidity of television and the quiet but insistent racism of the times. None of this is stuff needed to understand or enjoy the flick, but it's there.

I definitely enjoy these articles. Keep 'em coming.

PS People that fuckin' whine about things just ain't the way they used to be should shut up. Ya hear me, Chicken Little?
