A lot of people I know hate street art because it destroys public property and ends up costing people lots and lots of money etc. etc. etc. The digital age is apparently alleviating that problem. Unlike the mooninites fiasco in Boston, this isn't going to cause post-9/11 induced and unwarrented mass hysteria but I bet it will get the hackles up at everyone's least favorite corporate media conglomerate, clear channel.

Pretty rad!

From Supertouch Blog

SKULLPHONE SKYJACKS LA'S DIGITAL BILLBOARDS%u2026

Skullphone goes digital above Barracuda at 7769 Melrose%u2026

Right now the enigma that is known only as SKULLPHONE is easily Clear Channel Communications' greatest enemy in SoCal since he hijacked 10 of the advertising giant's most prominent digital billboards around LA in Hollywood, Westwood, and the art hotspot of Culver City. Hacking into the billboard's computer network today, our boy positioned his trademark skullphone imagery in between the array of flashing movie, TV, and auto company ads that make up the normal paid advertising barrage on the giant illuminated monitors. Keep an eye out for more photos to come throughout the day%u2026

Unfortunately, I know who skullphone is and I imagine it won't be difficult for "the man" to figure that out. So, for his sake, I hope this was perpetrated by a fan rather than skullphone personally. Based on what I know of him , I doubt he possesses the technological prowess to pull off such a feat but I hope he's well insulated, regardless.

not a big fan of street art, but i can definitely appreciate the time and effort that went into this.

I know who skullphone is and I imagine it won't be difficult for "the man" to figure that out.

don't overestimate "the man", a lot of IT guys lose their touch once they go corporate, and law enforcement officials, at least around here, can't keep up with a mediocre h4xOr! let alone a good one.

They hacked the Gibsons with a 486, imagine what they can do today.

Gas is $3.98/gallon here and I'm on one of the "outer" islands. Honolulu is cheaper by like 30-40 cents. And our gas station attendants all get employer provided health care if they work 20+ hours. WTF is going on in LA?

I guess hi-jacking the thread is kinda appropriate in this case.

By "hacks" it apparently means "paid for advertisements" as Clear Channel reported today these were in fact paid ads.

LA Times: Is Skullphone a Sellout?

Wired: Clear Channel: Digital Billboards Rented, Not Hacked

Alas, Clear Channel Outdoors, which owns the billboards, says no. "He paid to get it up," says spokeswoman Jennifer Gery. "It only ran for two days."

Update: Clear Channel's Tony Alwin is unhappy about the hacking rumors. "The advertisement was bought under the assumption that it was art that was in an art show," he says. "Any claims about hacking into our systems is false. It's a lie, even."

Spinning is one thing, but if those statements are untrue... that'd be a pretty bold lie, even for corporate spokespeople.
