what does "unfit" mean, mentally or physically?
I am not insulting you, just asking.
I was referring to the physical examination everybody has to go through. There are quite a lot of things that will get you off the hook, like allergies or a bad back.
But I'm sure with a diagnosed mental disorder, you'd be unfit as well.

Those german troops deployed to Afghanistan are soldiers that enlisted to be in the military on a voluntary basis.
The much larger part of germany's military is young people serving their obligatory (unless you choose to do civil service or are considered unfit) 9 months of military service. First three months are training, the rest is spent doing nothing much except drinking and getting fat.
Or so I'm told. I was among the unfit.
I did read about this a few days ago and it is good that you clarified. History has always proved that volunteer soldiers have the edge over conscripted soldiers. I was in a 10th Mountain Division infantry unit over 10 years ago and the Germans sent over a battalion to do some training with us. Even then they were kind of shocked when we did kick ass PT every morning. On the big battalion runs (the "easy" PT), we would constantly have to slow down just so the German soldiers could keep up. Germany needs to institute better recruiting. There is plenty of good beer, beautiful women, and breathtaking scenery... that is all very worth fighting for.
Let's not forget that there are pleanty of Servicemembers across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces that are out of shape, eat poorly, and smoke. In my early years in the Army, after graduation basic training, I kept to a diet of Ramen noodles, Vending Machine food and Beer Pong sized servings of Miller light.

one would think the smoking would have counteracted the weight again from the eating....pretty much that is the upside and downside of smoking isn't?...you smoke and that is bad,...but your thin and that is good......you give up the smoking and that is good, but you put on weight and that is bad...
Uh, you've never seen an overweight smoker? Smoking and exercise typically do not go hand in hand - something about not being able to breathe properly just tends to discourage heavy physical activity.
