Some people prefer other film genres than some other people, some of the time. Surprising, I know.

I mean, it's worth mentioning that if you take the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies out of the list the highest grossing films of all time, you are left with this:
1) Titanic
2) Pirates of the Carribean II (The shitty one)
3) Pirates of the Carribean II (The other shitty one)
4) Star Wars Ep I
5) Jurassic Park.

People like awful shit that they don't have to think about.

In my mind, a poll like this is invalid unless you force the respondents to watch every film considered in succession, regardless of personal preference.

After all, when more people have seen Juno than There Will Be Blood, of course Juno will receive more votes.

I think you may be onto something, what with the same movie being both second and third!

wink

To be fair, how many of the dollars grossed are owed to overseas markets that naturally favor broader pictures that rely upon visual effects and attractive leads over narrative and meaning that is easily lost in translation? And how many dollars come from children and teenagers, whose bad taste is easily excused?

Random polls of anonymous "movie fans" are bad enough, but paying any amount of attention to box office grosses will rapidly drive anyone with even a modicum of taste mad. Meet the Spartans is perhaps the best example in recent memory, but you need only look to this past weekend's grosses to see yet another film that has received a spectacular critical trouncing riding high at #1. And naturally, the leading man's Keanu-(fucking)-Reeves-by-way-of-Kevin-(goddamned)-Costner sci-fi acting chops are now so well established in Hollywood he's apparently going to star in the (presumably unconscionable) big-screen evisceration of Neuromancer. Not violently nauseous yet? Slated to direct: The fucking guy responsible for Torque and a bunch of Britney Spears' videos.
eeek puke puke puke skull

I was going to sit down this week to write and record a song entitled "Hey, Hayden Christensen, Please Go Be An Architect", but now I'm torn between waiting until 2009 when my blood is really boiling and just having a fatal aneurysm right now. Hmm...

Let me just say to anyone who has ever, for the slightest moment, considered seeing Jumper: go. Find the book by Steven Gould. Read it instead. The movie is a fucking abomination.

And while I haven't seen Juno - the subject matter kinda repels me - I can certainly understand people preferring comedies to movies like No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood, both of which have decidedly non-standard endings and some pretty bleak subject matter. A lot of people prefer laughing to watching people get brutally murdered. Strange, but true.

Oh, and remember that when Episode 1 came out, no one (or hardly anyone, at least) had any conception that it was going to be awful.

Is it wrong that I want to do Daniel Day Lewis even when he plays someone completely evil?
