Everyone loves a parade! Well, everyone except me when I'm trying to drive across a road currently occupied by a parade... or me, when I'm watching a parade... or anytime, really. As far as antiquated, small town American entertainment goes, a parade aint no fireworks.

But, as the saying goes, everyone loves a parade. Apparently, even hate-monger nazi-lovers!

A judge issued an order Thursday prohibiting a Rio samba group from parading during carnival with a float depicting naked bodies of Holocaust victims.

Judge Juliana Kalichszteim issued the injunction in response to a lawsuit by the Jewish Federation of Rio de Janeiro, which asked for the float be removed from this city's famed carnival parade next week, said Lara Voges, a spokeswoman for the judge.

The judge said the float could be used in the parade, but that organizers of the Viradouro samba group must remove mannequins meant to represent dead bodies from the Holocaust.

That seems more than reasonable, on the part of the judge. That's pretty much the definition of "fair." Making a statement along the lines of "Look, I'm not saying you can't be in the parade, I'm not even saying you can't use the float in the parade, just lose the part with the dead bodies representing Holocaust victims. Okay?"

An example of "unreasonable"?

Viradouro spokeswoman Eliane Lorca said the group had not yet seen the judge's order and that the president of the group would only comment after they had seen the "supposed decision."

Ahh, an uptight Nazi. The reporter wasn't lying to you lady, no need to be snippy.

The Jewish Federation praised the judge's decision.

"It's inadmissible that they could have a parade float depicting dead Jews and a live Hitler on top of them," said federation spokesman Jose Roitberg.

I like the subtle emphasis, on "live Hitler." As if to imply,"Now, if you wanna give us a dead Hitler with some live Jews kicking him in the head or something... then we might have something."

Reports in the media have said that Viradouro had planned to feature at least one dancer dressed as Adolf Hitler in the parade, using the theme: "It Gives you Goose Bumps."

Viradouro would neither confirm nor deny those plans.

"At least one." Wouldn't that just get confusing? I guess you could have him at different ages. Kid Hitler, Angry-Teen Hitler, Baby Hitler... But, really, wasn't The Producers enough? Too much, actually.

According to Kalichszteim's decision, the group would face fines of $113,000 if it ignores her order by parading without removing the mannequins and $28,000 for each dancer dressed as Hitler.

Sure, that's one way to go. Another would be to actually stop them from using the float, since, after all, a judge has already made a decision. Isn't that what a judge's ruling usually means?

Another report presents a slightly more cooperative Viradouro.

Viradouro insisted its Holocaust float is not meant to offend anyone.

"The float is extremely respectful, it's a warning, it's something shocking that we don't want to happen ever again," said Paulo Barros, Viradouro's artistic director.

I think Paulo's error here is greatly overestimating the size lesson that can be learned from watching a parade float. Which is to say, he thinks it's possible to learn a lesson from watching a parade float.

I guess we can maybe rule out these people being actual card-carrying Nazis. But then why the float?

Are they being sincere? Are they really naive enough to believe they could educate people about the dangers of racism using a pink sequin-covered swastika?

Were they trying to be funny? Funny would be having Hitler sodomized by one of those parade classic "costumed stilt men." Or having him slapped around by forest animals. Or smashing the "Death Mobile" from Animal House through the float, catapulting a dead Hitler through the air and into the open bedroom window of an aspiring Nazi... Funny, doesn't seem to be the goal of what they did.

Was it all for shock value? Seems like a long way to go, just for that reason. Especially considering they must've known it'd get shut down before debuting.

TheCoolerKing is curious about how this all actually plays out. And by the time you read, we should know how it went.

In situations such as this, my opinion is always 'let it roll.' The makers of the float will soon discover how popular it is when it travels down the main drag in front of thousands of viewers. Good luck getting it to the end of the road.
A fascist group in my home country called the national front decided they wanted to exercise their right to demonstrate their beliefs. The local council agreed that they could not lawfully stop them as long as civil policies were observed. The national front gloated in their immense intelligence that they were using the rule book to demonstrate what they believe in, in a public forum. What the young lads didn't expect is that it is also others rights to come view your parade..on the day when about 100 of them turned up to a street of 10,000-15,000 on lookers suddenly their conviction began to wane slightly. They were instructed to have their demonstration at their allotted time, or be considered time wasters of council time..needless to say this was no case of '300.' against the many...essentially approx 15000 on lookers all decided to go halves in an assault and battery charge that day.
Needless to say the national front as yet have never decided to demonstrate their beliefs again in public.

Viradouro is the name of the samba school... A big one, actually.

And lefthandright, you do realize that this wasn't just some tiny parade in a town lost in the middle of nowhere, but 3500 dancers and some 800 musicians, and this was not a fascist group trying to do their little hate parade, but a terrible idea for a float... I'm thinking they would have made it to the end.

I find the idea repugnant and idiotic, by the way. In case anyone feels like viewing the actual float to get an idea of why this would be upsetting (possibly an understatement), click below:
