Baseball is still America's national pastime.

A bold statement, to be sure, especially the day before the Super Bowl, but what other sport carries the nation's attention over such a long season, with new drama playing out every day for months on end?

Well, maybe a presidential election.

Perhaps that's what Topps was thinking when they decided to include presidential candidate cards mixed in with their 2008 baseball cards.

Along with stars like Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard, the new Topps set includes a dozen cards featuring presidential candidates (six Democrats and six Republicans). Sadly, fans of Chris Dodd, Duncan Hunter, Mike Gravel, and Tom Tancredo will not find their candidate among the set.

On average, one candidate card will be found in every ninth pack, which each cost about $3 and contain a dozen baseball cards. So a collector will have to spend hundreds of dollars to amass the entire candidate set, which will not be sold separately.

Pitchers and catchers report for spring training in 12 days.

Democrats and Republicans report for Super Tuesday on, well, Tuesday.

Get your cards as quickly as possible, before your 2008 Ron Paul is worth even less than your 2008 Wes Helms.

No Mike Gravel? What kind of leverage will I have to trade for a Ron Paul? frown

You're soul and sense of self-worth.

I went back and looked at the Smoking Gun, and then went over to the TOPPS website (for some sort of confirmation). It looks pretty cool, but I am not sure if that is going to entice me into buying baseball cards again after a 20+ year hiatus. You know, I bet SG cards, complete with stats and witty commentary would do much better. smile

I'd like an Elizabeth Kucinich card.

I wonder what you see when you turn it over for the stats.

TOPPS was #3 to Fleer and Upper Deck when I got out 15+ years ago. Then they all got waxed by WoTC.

This is the epitome of the American Dream to me. Sell little pieces of wood pulp, artificially control supply, and let the money roll in.

We do have SG Cards, I believe it is a playing deck though.

If you click on the presidential candidate cards link, you can see all of the cards both front and back.
