If I misinterpreted the intent or point of your post, here is your chance to make yourself clear. Please, elaborate so that you don't seem like a plain old asshole.

Infer it however you like for the white-knighting Devil's advocate responses to come. I'm sure you understood it perfectly.

I did after I re-read it; which is why I suggested you clarify your position. At first I thought you were an asshole. I still think you're an asshole, but for a completely different reason.

While I agree that some people are creating or posting in threads like these to "attach their names to an Internet sob fest," not all of them are. To group everyone into this category - when their motivations are entirely unknown to you - is completely unfair.

Hyperbole, friend. I didn't claim to know the motivations of every single person who does anything.

yet your post implied that you did, and that you thought they were all full of shit for feeling sorry that a human being died while there were other situations happening elsewhere that you felt (feel?) are what everybody should be talking about instead.

granted, those topics are something that do require attention, but don't be a complete asshole about it by belittling people for paying attention to something else for a little bit.

I could argue that they're not feeling sorry for him as a human being, but I already got the mileage I wanted from taking the piss out of the "neo-liberal world awareness guy" angle. My ginger tea has finished brewing.

All that unpleasant stuff in Darfur is still going on and I don't even know if Afghanistan even exists anymore, but thank fucking god twenty five people are falling over themselves to post about an actor that was in one movie that people will remember vaguely in twenty years.

Similarly, you're still wasting your time writing post after post in a thread about an actor's death instead of using those precious moments to do jack shit about Darfur or Afghanistan. Maybe you should lead us peons by example and get the fuck off the internet?

Or you could just grow up. The banal 'point' you make, despite shock-jock pretensions of outrageousness, comes up on these boards every time a notable figure dies. It's never anything but absurd, based upon the twin fallacies that a) sorrow and sympathy (and their expression) are finite resources, able to be applied to this or to that tragedy, but not to both, and b) any member's sadness over a celebrity's death categorically means he or she is uninvolved with or ignorant to 'larger' human rights concerns.

Not the case, not a substantive post, not a contribution of value.

My initial thought was "hey, that's good for the movie, right?"

...and then I flashed back to the Bill Hicks bit on marketing and almost killed myself.

"Oooh! Goin' for that death dollar? That's a good dollar!"

A U.S. radio host who mocked Heath Ledger's death live on air a few hours after his passing has been slammed by gay activists. During his Tuesday show, Fox News Radio presenter John Gibson played an audio clip from the movie Brokeback Mountain in which Jake Gyllenhaal's character says to Ledger's, "I wish I knew how to quit you." Gibson then told his listeners, "Well, he found out how to quit you." Later in the broadcast, Gibson played another Brokeback Mountain clip, this time of Ledger's character saying, "We're dead." The host then mockingly repeated, "We're dead," before playing the clip again. Gibson, who is on record as criticizing Brokeback Mountain as a "gay agenda movie," went on to label Ledger a "weirdo" who had "a serious drug problem" and speculated as to reasons why the actor may have taken his own life. Ledger, who was found dead in his New York apartment on Tuesday, is not thought to have committed suicide, according to authorities and his family. Rashad Robinson, a spokesman for The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), says, "Gibson's remarks are vulgar and disgusting. It's sickening that Gibson would exploit Heath Ledger's tragic death to promote such hurtful intolerance. And to do so at a time when family and friends are grieving shows a level of insensitivity that is beyond the pale." On his Wednesday show, Gibson refused to apologize for his comments, explaining they were just "a little Brokeback Mountain joke" and there is "no point in passing up a good joke."
