why do people say 'on line' instead of 'in line'? Like 'I waited on line at the DMV today.' I might be wrong, but shouldn't be, 'I waited in line at the DMV today?'
It is regional, just like how some people say "queue" instead of "line." I don't see it as grammatically incorrect. I mean you're no more inside of a line than you are on top of a line.

If I'm in the middle of a line, I'm "in line", as there are two sides of the line, one in front, and one behind. Either that, or I'm at the front, or at the back of the line. In all these instances, I'm part of the line.
"On line" seems to suggest that the line is an entity separate from those who make it. Like the line's going to be there when no one else is.
Yeah, I've never heard anyone say "on line" in place of where I'd normally say "in line". But it wouldn't suprise me if it were some regional thing. My girlfriend lived in New Orleans for years, and apparently they describe grocery shopping as "making groceries". I can't even begin to understand that one. Point is, unfamiliarity frightens me.

I thought it was always "in line". What I don't get are "in line" skates. Like, that wording makes no sense to me. Is it just product reassurance?
The wheels are "in line" as opposed to in rows like roller skates. Why doesn't it make sense?

Oh...that actually does make sense. Erm...nevermind
I thought it meant like, "as opposed to off-centered to mess up your balance", right? For a sec I thought it was like a self-evident term, but now I just feel kinda doofy, actually...
