All those books by Anne McCaffrey. Telepaths and Dragonriders - and the fact that I found those books right in the middle of puberty made it all really exciting.

haha, i was a huge anne mccaffrey junkie in my early teens. i even checked out books a second time from the library if i ran out of stuff to read.

Library? Shit, I still own almost the entire Pern series (not including the ones written by her son) and a good chunk of the Rowan/Telepaths books. Some things you just can't let go of, and books are really really hard to lose...

I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower at least once a year (and get misty each time), which is slightly embarrassing.

Even though I'm a fairly liberal, peace-loving, quasi-anarchistic young modern lass, I have an embarrassing hard-on for cheesy military fiction, especially this book.

I'm always intrigued by his concepts, but I can never get through his novels. But I always want to read him. So, tell me, what should I try to read first?

The Southern Victory (or Timeline 191) is probably my favorite series of his. It starts just after the South won the civil war, and goes from there with the USA and the CSA both being major powers who aren't friendly. The last book in the series is the end of WWII , so you get like 2 generations of characters through the whole series. I liked it. His writing isn't the best ever, but I like his characters and plot.

I can't say I'm really all that embarassed about the books I enjoyed reading but I feel like an ass when I've fresh run out of reading material and run down to the grocery store to buy what ever piece of crap is on the newsstand. I hate Dan Brown for little other reason than that I have put myself through reading four of his novels. I did however find "Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West" on one of those nights when I was fiending and enjoyed it.

The Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton. I know that they're repetitive smut, but they're entertaining, comparatively well-written repetitive smut.

Also, I'll give another vote to pretty much everything by Anne McCaffrey, for pretty much the same reasons. I was obsessed with them as a kid, they were some of the first novels that got me interested in the Fantasy genre, so they'll always have a place in my heart.

I haven't picked up a Xanth novel in a while, but for a long time it was those and Dragonlance novels.

nowadays it's probably more along the lines of air travel junkfood books like Clancey or Stephen King (don't get me started on his Dark Tower ending)

I'm also a total magazine whore. I have more motorcycle, politics, and men's magazines showing up than I can read before the next issues arrive.
I can't help it...it's like 25 cents for a subscription these days.

I second the Dresden Files. Most series get old and stale after a couple books, but I like the writing style of Butcher. He is merchandising the crap out of them though.

Other than that, I'd say the most guilty pleasure reads are anything by John Ringo. I recommend the Ghost series.

A while back I just wanted to read some trash, so I picked up some Elizabeth Gage. Pure trash but it allowed me to put it down at any time and pick it back up again.

I don't really have time for guilty pleasure reading; the only guilty pleasure I really have is that I watch Supernatural every Thursday. I realize the rest of the fanbase is a bunch of frothing 13-year old girls, but I swear it's got the best myth arc of a TV series since Babylon 5, and I'm a sucker for stories about the war between heaven and hell (Paradise Lost, Hellblazer comics, etc.).

agreed on Supernatural, don't feel bad its great

My guilty pleasure book series that I've just started again for the umpteenth time is The Vampire Diaries - LJ Smith, not Anne Rice. I just found out they are making a TV show (actually, I think it will be paired with Supernatural on Thursdays) and I figure I'd go back and enjoy them once more before they are potentially crapped on by the TV show. Yes, teen angst vampire novel FTW and WAY WAY WAY before that Twilight crap wink

uh I have a horrible attraction to really bad vampire and romance novels, right now i'm about done reading the southern vampires by Charlaine Harris which that hbo show true blood is based off of, and one of my all time favorite guilty pleasures is Carolina Moon by Nora Roberts, it's okay as far as horrible romance novel trash is concerned. Carolina Moon is that book that pretty much lives in the bathroom and any time you need to take a poo most of my friends want to borrow after they read the first chapter on the toilet LOL
