His disgusting words stick a knife in the backs of every veteran who fought (and sometimes died)

Is it just me who thinks this sentance is slightly odd?

What? But Smith is right. Hitler didn't wake up in the mornings, rubbing his hands like some cartoon villian, out to do the baddest bad possible. He was just a racist fucking asshole, as are a lot of people. Racist and influential.

The real conflict here comes from our bad, human habit to exagerate and monsterify (not a word, but I had an english teacher use it once) someone with different beliefs from us. A person may commit only evil acts, but to believe that they are committing them solely for the purpose of being evil is probably a fallacy.
If allow ourselves to get so mad that we give up our rationality in the fight against racism and intolerance, then we our losing pretty much the only thing that separates us from them.

a little something i learned in my early days of teaching:

Leave Hitler out of your parables, teaching tales and metaphors.
If you have a point to make, or a message to convey,
find away to make it without mentioning Hitler.
If you are a decent teacher, you should be able to find a way.
Good Luck!

I think people need to chill out about this kind of stuff. He said something that can vaguely (if you squint a bit and maybe hold it about a foot back) be interpreted as some sort of vague representation of racism.. .vaguely. and its not like he's someone incredibly culturally important. It wasnt the president (though I question if hes culturally relevent either), it wasnt someone who people should actually listen to when it comes to philosophy or whatever, so stop worrying so much.

Im going to bed. please dont flamexors me in my sleepz. if anyone would actually flame me for that. ::shrug::

Wow, calling on Obama to answer for Will Smith? That right there has to be more offensive than anything Smith actually said.

+1
And I have no problem with Will's statement that Hitler didn't believe that Hitler was evil. Does the JDL really think they're advancing anything by attacking that statement?

Next time you're presented with a thread such as this, I heartily suggest that you read all comments before writing something like the above.

Practically everybody in this thread agrees with the viewpoint you expressed. Nobody is really worried. I don't think you need to worry about flames while you sleep.

Thank you also for reminding us not to base our lives on the teachings of Will Smith I, Fresh Prince.

I didnt mean the people in the thread. I meant people, society, minority groups that get all up in arms over PC issues. I did read all the comments.

and as for being flamed, you never know where threads go in the time when you're sleeping. I didnt expect to get flamed, but I figured Id better cover my ass anyway.

Well, I'm sure that nobody made any 'dumb jew' remarks after they flipped out about it. Nobody at all. </sarcasm>

But really, if you're trying to protect your religion/race/whatever from being slurred, the first step should always be to see if it was, in fact, slurred.

When Smith said "Hitler", it was actually code language for "Tom Cruise".

jumped out at me. So politicians are now responsible for the content of each and every statement made by one of their supporters? surreal

I think this tends to tie into the stupid (and fairly racist) idea that, if one black dude says/does something stupid, he's somehow representing the entire race. Of course, if he does something totally awesome, he's an anomaly and only representing himself.

SleepyLady publishes an article implying the "official" Jewish position (as if there possibly could be one) on Will Smith is defined by the JDL??? Which of course leads to posts about Jews being overly concerned about anti-Semitism. Articles like this are commonly referred to as "talking trash". What next, we interview the KKK on when a black person says something mildly controversial about a white person? Thanks for the hate.

I wasn't implying that. What the hell? I was quoting an article I read that I found amusing AND AND AND Will Smith has only apologized to the JDL - no other group - so I found it relevant.

You're welcome for the hate, except there was none. Calm down.

I don't think its healthy to say 'do not discuss a significant historical figure on any terms but the ones pre-approved by our group.'

He is not a sanctified religious figure, so religious sensibilities can not be invoked. Tens of millions of people died in the war he started and it is the right of all people to discuss Hitler, his possible intent, his possible goals, and the evil done at his behest.

I applaud.

TBH, I would prefer you'd gone further, because I think that religious sensibilities are often used as a cover.
