Graffiti, stenciling, tagging, any non-legal street art basically. I personally really love it. It breaks up the ugliness that is row upon row of concrete walls. Some people look down upon it and say who am I to paint on others property. Well, who are they to mow down nature and put up concrete? I have respect, I dont do churches, small business, homes, cars. Anyone else?

When it's done creatively it's great. I especially love when a whole section of wall is completely covered. One lone tag in the midst of completely blank walls looks kindof ugly. There was a bridge here that was completely covered in layer upon layer of beautiful graffiti.

By the way, does anyone know what the egyptian heiroglyphic-style owls I keep seeing mean?

I guess that anyone who has a tattoo is into graffiti. After all, what is a tattoo, but graffiti on oneself?

I feel thoroughly defiled.......

I've been dropping some stencils here in LA for a bit. If I ever get off my ass to take some pictures of them I'll put them up.

Also I discovered I live about a half mile from the OBEY guy's office, which would explain why I see so much of his work around here.

I'm sorry ava since you probably got tagged by some no talent hack who's just being an asshole, but if there was someone in my neighborhood doing stuff like what nataskaput posted, I would probably try to get them to use my building. I would pretend I didn't want it at first, but when it happened, I would respond in a loveably grumpy way to hide the fact that I'm really trying to save the neighborhood through the powers of dance.

There's a real simple difference. In case you missed it, people are "mowing down nature and putting up concrete" on their own property. You're tagging stuff that doesn't belong to you which you have no business defacing.

Six layers of people spray painting their name on a wall is not cool. It's ugly, it lowers property values, and contributes to crime.

I'm guessing you don't own any property. When you get some, will you be sure to let me know so I can come and paint all over it?

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say it contributes to crime. That's like saying art museums contribute to people being pretentious fuckfaces.

Broken Window Theory.

Basically, it states that uncorrected vandalism gives an appearance of a lack of law enforcement, which is an atmosphere comfortable to criminals, which in turn leads to more crime, etc.

yeah i got a fucked up story about this...my friend got caught tagging so he was put on probation, then a few months later he got caught again and put in jail. well the next day one of my girl friends got raped by some asshole...but our friend wound up doing more jailtime for tagging than this asshole who raped a girl. we need to get our fuckin priorities straight...i understand if people don like tagging, but who should we crack down on harder?

cities have sometimes successfully combated the graffiti problem by setting up a designated area where people can paint. so it becomes a skill that is honed and admired rather than simply an ugly act of devience as it is generally regarded. one could even argue that it builds community cohesion. it's funny when I've seen really good paint get left up for weeks while the surrounding crap tags get painted over. sometimes they even take the door down or whatever and sell it. graffiti should get its due.

check out a book called "crimes of style" by jeff ferrell. a cool ethnography book containing in depth interveiws with graffiti writers.

tru dat. all this police state crap isn't going to make graffiti go away. and ongoing enforcement costs way more than just giving artists a wall saying,"ok. you can tag all you want as long as you do it over here". let's use our heads and find a way to co-exist peacefully, yea? there's gotta be a better way to do things.
